The Merry Farmer (operetta)
''The Merry Farmer'' (German: ''Der fidele Bauer'') is a German-language operetta composed by Leo Fall with a libretto by Viktor Léon. It premiered at the Mannheim Hoftheater on 27 July 1907 and was Fall's first major hit. It transferred to the Theater an der Wien in June 1908, and to the Theater des Westens, Berlin, in October 1908. As ''The Merry Peasant'', the operetta was produced in London in 1909, opening at the Strand Theatre on 23 October for 69 performances, with Courtice Pounds (as ) & Sybil Arundale (as Annamirl). The English book and lyrics were by Cosmo Hamilton, with additional songs by Theodore Holland Theodore Samuel Holland, OBE (25 April 1878 – 29 October 1947), was a British composer and academic. Sybil Arundale
Sybil Arundale (20 June 1879 – 5 September 1965) was an English stage and film actress born Sybil Kelly. From age 11, Arundale appeared with her sister Grace in music halls, where they were billed as "The Sisters Arundale". An early dramatic role, in 1898, was Oberon in ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' and later as Rosalind in ''As You Like It''. She appeared with the Birmingham Repertory Company, where she performed in Ibsen’s ''The Pillars of Society'' and ''The Wild Duck''. She also appeared in pantomime and musicals, including ''Dick Whittington and His Cat'', ''The Toreador'', ''Venus'' by George Grossmith, '' My Lady Molly'' and '' The Cingalee''. Theodore Holland
Theodore Samuel Holland, OBE (25 April 1878 – 29 October 1947), was a British composer and academic. Born in Wimbledon, Holland attended Westminster School and then the Royal College of Music, where his composition teacher was Frederick Corder. A further period of study followed at the Musikhochschule Berlin, Musikhochschule in Berlin under Joseph Joachim.Blom, Eric. Cosmo Hamilton
Cosmo Hamilton (29 April 1870 – 14 October 1942), born Henry Charles Hamilton Gibbs, was an English playwright and novelist. He was the brother of writers Arthur Hamilton Gibbs, Francis William Hamilton Gibbs, Helen Katherine Hamilton Gibbs and Sir Philip Gibbs. Biography Hamilton was born in Norwood. He took his mother's maiden name when he began to write. Hamilton was married twice: first to Beryl Faber, née Crossley Smith, who died in 1912. (She was the sister of actor C. Aubrey Smith.) Hamilton then married Julia Bolton, the former wife of playwright Guy Bolton. Leo Fall
Leopold Fall (2 February 187316 September 1925) was an Austrian Kapellmeister and composer of operettas. Life Born in Olmütz (Olomouc), Leo (or Leopold) Fall was taught by his father Moritz Fall (1848–1922), a bandmaster and composer, who settled in Berlin. The younger Fall studied at the Vienna Conservatory before rejoining his father in Berlin. His teachers in Vienna were Robert Fuchs and Johann Nepomuk Fuchs. In 1895 he began a new career as an operetta conductor in Hamburg, and started to compose. From 1904 onwards he devoted himself to composition. While less successful than his contemporary Franz Lehár, he was nevertheless capable of producing melodious and well orchestrated work. After working in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne he settled in Vienna in 1906, where he died. He is buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery. Novello Theatre
The Novello Theatre is a West End theatre on Aldwych, in the City of Westminster. It was known as the Strand Theatre between 1913 and 2005. History The theatre was built as one of a pair with the Aldwych Theatre on either side of The Waldorf Hilton, London, both being designed by W. G. R. Sprague. The theatre was opened by The Shubert Organization as the Waldorf Theatre on 22 May 1905, and was renamed the Strand Theatre, in 1909. It was again renamed as the Whitney Theatre in 1911, before again becoming the Strand Theatre in 1913. In 2005, the theatre was renamed by its owners (Delfont Mackintosh Theatres) the Novello Theatre in honour of Ivor Novello, who lived in a flat above the theatre from 1913 to 1951.
