The McCarver Neighborhood is located in Tacoma, Washington. It is an urban neighborhood located in the Downtown and the Hilltop area of Tacoma. Description The neighborhood is named after McCarver Elementary School, which was the first magnet school in the nation. The neighborhood's boundaries are South 19th Street to the north, Center Street to the south, Tacoma Ave. to the east, and South L Street to the west. The McCarver Neighborhood was once a center of blight but in recent years has gentrified with new condominium & townhome developments along with condominium conversions from apartments. The neighborhood's central street is maple tree lined Yakima Avenue that run north and south through the neighborhood. Tacoma ( ) is the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States. Downtown is the central business district of Tacoma, Washington, United States, located in the inner Northeast section of the city. It is approximately bounded east-west by A Street and Tacoma Avenue, and north-south by South 7th Street and South 25th Street. The center of downtown is the intersection of 9th and Broadway. History Downtown Tacoma's mid-century downturn was exacerbated by the opening of the Tacoma Mall in the 1960s. Many of the anchor retail stores left downtown to relocate to the mall. Following this exodus of retailers, city leadership attempted to make downtown more appealing to shoppers by building two large parking garages and by closing off to traffic two blocks of Broadway Street between South 9th and South 11th Streets. Hilltop Neighborhood, Tacoma, Washington
The Hilltop Neighborhood is a historically diverse neighborhood in the Tacoma, Washington Central District. The National Register of Historic Places specifies the geographic area of Hilltop as located within the City of Tacoma and bounded on the east by Tacoma Avenue South, on the north by Division Avenue, on the west by Sprague Avenue, and on the south by the edge of the bluff, which roughly equates to South 27th Street. Hilltop derives its name from its location on a high bluff overlooking Commencement Bay and the Port of Tacoma. Hilltop is near the historic Tacoma Public Library main branch, Bates Technical College, the Pierce County Courthouse, and the new Pierce County Correctional Facility, all of which are located on Hilltop's east side.
