''The Last of the Australians'' was an Australian sitcom that was broadcast on the Nine Network in 1975 and 1976. The comedy series was produced by Crawford Productions in two series of 13 episodes each. It was based on Alan Seymour's play ''The One Day of the Year'' and is about an irascible father and his interactions with family life. The One Day Of The Year
''The One Day of the Year'' is a 1958 Australian play by Alan Seymour about contested attitudes to Anzac Day. Plot Alf’s son Hughie and his girlfriend Jan plan to document Anzac Day for the university newspaper, focusing on the drinking on Anzac Day. For the first time in his life Hughie refuses to attend the dawn service with Alf. When he watches the march on television at home with his mother and Wacka, he is torn between outrage at the display and love for his father. Characters Alf Cook, Dot Cook, Hughie Cook, Wacka Dawson and Jan Castle. Origins The play was inspired by an article in the University of Sydney newspaper ''Honi Soit'' criticising Anzac Day and Seymour's own observations of how ex-servicemen behaved on that day. Alan Seymour
Alan Seymour (6 June 192723 March 2015) was an Australian playwright and author. He is best known for the play ''The One Day of the Year'' (1958). His international reputation rests not only on this early play, but also on his many screenplays, television scripts and adaptations of novels for film and television. Career Seymour was born in Fremantle, Western Australia. Situation Comedy
A sitcom, a portmanteau of situation comedy, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Alwyn Cecil Kurts (28 October 1915 – 4 May 2000) was an Australian drama and comedy actor of radio, television and film, best remembered for his role as gruff Inspector Colin Fox in the TV series ''Homicide''. Biography Kurts' father, David Day, was a well-known radio personality in the postwar years. Kurts worked on breakfast radio on Perth station 6PR in 1942. He then became an accredited war correspondent reporting from Burma, New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war he moved to 3XY with his program ''Raising a Husband''. Terence Richard Norris (born 9 June 1930) is an Australian stage, television and film actor, and politician. Maurice Fields (born Maurice Sheil, 4 August 1926 – 18 December 1995) was an Australian vaudeville performer, actor and stand-up comedian. Career Fields became a well-known face on television first thanks to his comic sketches on live programs like ''Sunnyside Up'' and later dramatic roles as the conniving John Quinney in ABC TV's ''Bellbird''.
