The Kinks Choral Collection
''The Kinks Choral Collection'' is an album, released 15 June 2009 in the UK and 10 November 2009 in the US, by Ray Davies and the Crouch End Festival Chorus. The album features new studio recordings of Ray Davies' compositions, all but one of which were originally recorded by his band The Kinks. The collection begins with versions of seven Kinks singles including some of the less well-known singles (including the non-charting "Shangri-La" and "Celluloid Heroes") as well as some of their most successful (including "You Really Got Me" and "Waterloo Sunset"). It then features a version of the title track from Davies' 2007 solo album '' Working Man's Café'', versions of six album tracks from The Kinks' 1968 album '' The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society'' and closes with a version of another well-known Kinks single " All Day and All of the Night". Ray Davies
Sir Raymond Douglas Davies ( ; born 21 June 1944) is an English musician. He was the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and main songwriter for the rock band the Kinks, which he led with his younger brother Dave on lead guitar and backing vocals. He has also acted in, directed, and produced shows for theatre and television. Known for focusing his lyrics on English culture, nostalgia, and social satire, he is often referred to as the "Godfather of Britpop", though he disputes this title. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Kinks in 1990. After the dissolution of the Kinks in 1996, he embarked on a solo career. Picture Book (song)
"Picture Book" is a song by the English rock band the Kinks from their 1968 album '' The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society''. Written and sung by Ray Davies, the song's lyrics describe the experience of an ageing narrator flipping through a photo album reflecting on happy memories from "a long time ago". Recorded in , its cheerful sound is defined by the jangle of an acoustic twelve-string guitar and a disengaged snare drum. In continental Europe, the song was issued as the B-side of the album's lead single, " Starstruck", in November1968. The same single was issued in the United States in January1969, though it failed to appear in any charts. "Village Green" is a song by the English rock band the Kinks from their 1968 album '' The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society''. Written and sung by the band's principal songwriter, Ray Davies, the song was first recorded in November1966 during the sessions for '' Something Else by the Kinks'' (1967) but was re-recorded in . Both the composition and instrumentation of "Village Green" evoke Baroque music, especially its prominently featured harpsichord played by session keyboardist Nicky Hopkins. Unlike most of the band's recordings, it employs real orchestral instruments, including oboe, cello, viola and piccolo, as arranged by English composer David Whitaker. See My Friends
"See My Friends" (sometimes titled "See My Friend") is a song by the English rock band the Kinks, written by the group's singer and guitarist, Ray Davies. Released in July 1965, it reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart, ''Record Retailer'' chart. The song incorporates a Drone (music), drone-effect played on guitar, evoking a sound reminiscent of the Indian Tanpura, tambura. "See My Friends" is one of the key early works in the style known as raga rock. Music historian Jonathan Bellman sees it as the first Western rock song to integrate Indian raga sounds, citing its release four months ahead of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)", which includes a sitar part. Victoria (The Kinks Song)
"Victoria" is a song written by Ray Davies of the Kinks. It is the opening track on the band's 1969 concept album ''Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)''. In Ray Davies' satirical style, the lyrics juxtapose the grim realities of life in Britain during the 19th century (''"Sex was bad, called obscene/And the rich were so mean"'') with the paternalist aspirations of the British Empire in the Victorian age (''"From the West to the East/From the rich to the poor/Victoria loved them all"''), and expresses the simple adulation of queen and country by the downtrodden working class (''"Though I am poor, I am free/When I grow I shall fight/For this land I shall die"''). Days (The Kinks Song)
"Days" is a song by the Kinks, written by lead singer Ray Davies, released as a single in 1968. It also appeared on an early version of the album '' The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society'' (released only in continental Europe and New Zealand). It now appears as a bonus track of the remastered CD. On the original Pye 7N 17573 label, the name of the song is "Day's" due to a grammatical error. Release and reception The song was an important single for Davies and the Kinks, coming in a year of declining commercial fortunes for the band. Chrissie Hynde
Christine Ellen Hynde (born September 7, 1951) is an American musician. She is a founding member and the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band the Pretenders, and one of the band's two remaining original members alongside drummer Martin Chambers. Hynde formed the Pretenders in Hereford, England in 1978, with Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott and Chambers. She has also recorded a number of songs with other musicians including Frank Sinatra, Cher and UB40. She recorded her first solo album, ''Stockholm'', in 2014. Hynde was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Pretenders. The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and (from March 2015) audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on UKChartsPlus as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. However, even though number 100 was classed as a hit album (as in the case of The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums) in the 1980s until January 1989, since the compilations were removed this definition was changed to Top 75 with follow-up books such as The Virgin Book of British Hit Albums book only including this data.
