The Jakarta Post
''The Jakarta Post'' is a daily English-language newspaper in Indonesia. The paper is owned by PT Niskala Media Tenggara and based in the nation's capital, Jakarta. ''The Jakarta Post'' started as a collaboration between four Indonesian media at the urging of Information Minister Ali Murtopo and politician Jusuf Wanandi. After the first issue was printed on 25 April 1983, it spent several years with minimal advertisements and increasing circulation. After a change in chief editors in 1991, it began to take a more vocal pro-democracy point of view. The paper was one of the few Indonesian English-language dailies to survive the 1997 Asian financial crisis and currently has a circulation of about 40,000. Susanto Pudjomartono
Susanto Pudjomartono (May 18, 1943 – January 14, 2015) was an Indonesian newspaper editor, journalist and diplomat. He served as the second chief editor of ''The Jakarta Post'' from 1991 until 2003. Pudjomartono was then appointed as Indonesia's Ambassador to Russia from 2003 to 2008. He was also a co-founder of Indonesia's Editors' Club. In 1966, Pudjomartono graduated from the School of Social Sciences at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta. He began his career at '' Tempo magazine''. He departed Tempo for ''The Jakarta Post'', which was launched in 1983. Sabam Siagian served as the newspaper's first chief editor from 1983 to 1991. Early 1980s Recession
The early 1980s recession was a severe economic recession that affected much of the world between approximately the start of 1980 and 1983. It is widely considered to have been the most severe recession since World War II. A key event leading to the recession was the 1979 energy crisis, mostly caused by the Iranian Revolution which caused a disruption to the global oil supply, which saw oil prices rising sharply in 1979 and early 1980. The sharp rise in oil prices pushed the already high rates of inflation in several major advanced countries to new double-digit highs, with countries such as the United States, Canada, West Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan tightening their monetary policies by increasing interest rates in order to control the inflation. The New Order ( id, Orde Baru, abbreviated ''Orba'') is the term coined by the second Indonesian President Suharto to characterise his administration as he came to power in Transition to the New Order, 1966 until his Fall of Suharto, resignation in 1998. Suharto
Suharto (; ; 8 June 1921 – 27 January 2008) was an Indonesian army officer and politician, who served as the second and the longest serving president of Indonesia. Antara is an Indonesian news agency organized as a statutory corporation. It is the country's national news agency, supplying news reports to many domestic media organizations. It is the only organization authorized to distribute news materials created by foreign news agencies. The news agency was founded in 1937, when the country was still a colony in the Dutch Empire, by independence activists dissatisfied with the lack of local coverage by the Dutch-owned Aneta news agency. Antara's operation was absorbed into the Dōmei Tsushin news network following invasion by the Japanese in 1942. Its staff played a key role in the broadcast of Indonesia's proclamation of independence and assumed control of the Dōmei facilities in the region at the end of the war. Muhammad Chudori
Muhammad Chudori (December 24, 1926 – March 23, 2013) was an Indonesian journalist. Chudori co-founded ''The Jakarta Post'' in 1983 and served as the newspaper's first general manager. Chudori was born in Indramayu, Java, on December 24, 1926. He worked as a journalist for the Antara news agency from 1956 until his retirement in 1983. He predominantly covered foreign policy and the economy for Antara. He had also served as Antara's bureau chief in the Netherlands as well. Chudori had close contacts within the Indonesian government and has been described as well-versed in the economic policies of the Suharto government at the time. Harmoko
Harmoko (7 February 1939 – 4 July 2021), colloquially referred to as Bung Harmoko, was an Indonesian politician and journalist who was active during the New Order era. He served as the Speaker of the People's Representative Council from 1997 until 1999, and was a factor in president Suharto's resignation during the widespread student demonstrations which occurred at the end of the New Order. Born from humble origins in East Java, on 7 February 1939, Harmoko graduated from journalistic school, and became a journalist. Sabam Pandapotan Siagian (4 May 1932 – 3 June 2016) was an Indonesian journalist. He served as the first editor in chief of ''The Jakarta Post''. Siagian departed the ''Jakarta Post'' in 1991 upon his appointment as Ambassador of Indonesia to Australia. From 1991 to 1995, while ambassador, Sabam lived in Canberra. He criticised the Australian media for lagging behind other sectors in Australia when it came to engaging with Indonesia. After leaving Canberra in 1995, Sabam joined the board of ''Jakarta Post''.
