''The Island'' ( es, La isla) is a 1979 Argentine drama film written and directed by Alejandro Doria. It was the first Argentine film to be a box office success during the military dictatorship. Alejandro Doria
Alejandro Doria (November 1, 1936 – June 17, 2009) was a noted Argentine cinema and television director. Life and work Born in Buenos Aires in 1936, he first worked for Argentine television in 1965 as a writer for a local variety show, ''Show rambler''. He first directed professionally for ''Adorable Professor Aldao'', a 1968 romantic comedy series. Doria's contract to direct the 1969 season of a top-rated sitcom, ''Nuestra galleguita'' (''Our Galician Girl''), secured his career in Argentine /television, and he directed numerous series during the early 1970s and was a guest producer several times for ''Alta Comedia'', a comedy showcase. Doria first directed for the cinema in 1974. Argentina has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1961. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature length, feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English language, English dialogue. The award was not created until the 29th Academy Awards, 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. This is a list of submissions to the 52nd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 52nd Academy Awards, twenty-three films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The People's Republic of China submitted a film for the first time. Sandra Mihanovich (born April 24, 1957) is an Argentine singer, musician, and composer of Rock, Blues, and Tango rhythms. Biography She was born in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the daughter of Iván Mihanovich, a polo player of Croatian descent, and Mónica Cahen D'Anvers, a journalist and TV anchorperson. She inherited from her paternal grandfather her passion for jazz music.
