The Hat Box Mystery
''The Hat Box Mystery'' is a 1947 mystery film directed by Lambert Hillyer and starring Tom Neal, Pamela Blake and Allen Jenkins.Pitts p.269 It was produced as a featurette for release by Robert L. Lippert's Screen Guild Productions. It was shot at the General Service Studios in Hollywood. The film's sets were designed by the art director William Glasgow. Synopsis Susan Hart, the secretary and fiancée of private detective Russ Ashton takes a case in his absence. Given a hat box by her client with a hidden camera inside she is told to take a photograph of his wife so he can begin divorce proceedings. Instead when she opens the box the woman is shot dead and she finds herself accused of murder. Lambert Hillyer
Lambert Harwood Hillyer (July 8, 1893 – July 5, 1969) was an American film director and screenwriter. Biography Lambert Harwood Hillyer was born July 8, 1893, in Tyner, Indiana. His mother was character actress Lydia Knott. A graduate of Drake University, Drake College, he worked as a newspaper reporter and an actor in vaudeville and stock theater. During World War I he began working in motion pictures and became a prolific director and screenwriter, working on many silent-era Westerns by William S. Hart, Buck Jones, Tom Mix and others. Often associated with producer Thomas H. Ince, Hillyer expanded into romantic melodramas and crime films in the 1920s. Virginia Sale (May 20, 1899 – August 23, 1992) was an American character actress whose career spanned six decades, during most of which she played older women, even when she was in her twenties. Over the 46 years she was active as an actress, she worked in films, stage, radio and television. She was famous for her one-woman stage show, ''Americana Sketches'', which she did for more than 1,000 performances during a 15-year span. Married to actor and studio executive Sam Wren, she co-starred with him in one of the first television family comedies, ''Wren's Nest'', in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She gave birth to fraternal twins, Virginia and Christopher, in 1936. Later in her career she worked on television, and in commercials.
