The Harvesters (film)
''The Harvesters'' ( af, Die Stropers) is a 2018 internationally co-produced drama film written and directed by Etienne Kallos. Set in rural South Africa, the film follows the coming of age of Janno, a shy 15-year-old farm boy who must contend with the arrival of a sudden new addition to the family and the desires this awakens within him. The setting and storyline were inspired by Kallos' travels around the remote Eastern Free State region of the country and his encounters with farm families there. The film is a psychological drama that explores themes of belonging, sexual identity and masculinity. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Etienne Kallos
Etienne Kallos (born 1972) is a South African filmmaker best known for directing the 2018 film '' The Harvesters.'' Early life Kallos was born in South Africa to parents from Greek immigrant families that had settled in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and the Belgian Congo (the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Career After studying theater in South Africa, Kallos attended the graduate film program at New York University. In 2006, his short film ''Doorman'' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The short debuted at North America at Sundance Film Festival the following year. Kallos' graduate thesis project, titled ''Firstborn'', became the first Afrikaans-language short film to be awarded the Corto Cortissimo Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2009. 2018 Cannes Film Festival
The 71st annual Cannes Film Festival was held from 8 to 19 May 2018. Australian actress Cate Blanchett acted as President of the Jury. The Japanese film ''Shoplifters'', directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, won the Palme d'Or. Asghar Farhadi's psychological thriller '' Everybody Knows'', starring Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Ricardo Darín, opened the festival and competed in the Main Competition section.
