The Grimmrobe Demos
''The Grimmrobe Demos'' is Sunn O)))'s first recorded album and is the most direct representation of its self-proclaimed Earth-worship. It was originally limited to 500 copies by Hydra Head Records but, in 2005, Southern Lord Records reissued it on CD and vinyl with a bonus live track. An early rehearsal track titled "Bremerton" was included on the vinyl release. The album's third track was named after frontman Dylan Carlson of the band Earth and is a loose interpretation of the track "Ouroboros is Broken" from Earth's first release, '' Extra-Capsular Extraction''. Sunn (stylized in all lowercase) amplifiers was a brand of musical instrument amplifiers based in Tualatin, Oregon, United States. History In early 1963, the Kingsmen, a band based in Portland, Oregon, became known for their hit version of the song "Louie, Louie". After its hit single, the band soon embarked on a 50-state national tour. Because the band was used to playing small hops and school dances, many of the members found themselves ill-equipped with the amplifiers that they were currently using. Bassist Norm Sundholm discovered that his bass amp was not nearly powerful enough to play larger concert halls. Sundholm enlisted the help of his brother Conrad to help solve his problem. By 1964, the Sundholm brothers had designed a high-powered concert bass amplifier. Seldon Hunt (born 1969, in Melbourne and migrated to New York in 2006, (now residing in Brooklyn) is an artist best known for his photography and his graphic artwork (on album covers and promotional poster) for rock musicians. Hunt's photography usually consists of thick undergrowth yet is often devoid of any human presence. His work has been compared to the romantic landscape painting of the 19th Century. His influences include the works of Vaughan Oliver and Neville Brody. Hunt is best known in the world of music for his graphic works – often extremely complex – for rock bands Neurosis, Earth, Jesu, Isis, Dälek, Mick Harris, Acid Mothers Temple, and the Melvins. Dylan Carlson (born March 12, 1968) is an American musician, best known as the guitarist and founder of the drone metal/ post-rock group Earth, and the main contributor to his solo project Drcarlsonalbion. Early life and education Carlson was born in Seattle, Washington, United States. His father worked for the Department of Defense, and, as a result, as a child he moved quite frequently, living in Philadelphia, Texas, New Mexico, and New Jersey, before coming back to live in Washington state. Career He had first become interested in being a rock musician at age 15, inspired by bands such as Molly Hatchet, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath. He also cites the Melvins, and composers La Monte Young and Terry Riley as major influences on his music.
