The Greatest Story Ever Told (radio Program)
''The Greatest Story Ever Told'' is an American old-time radio religious drama. It was broadcast on American Broadcasting Company, ABC from January 26, 1947, until December 30, 1956. Beginning July 25, 1948, the program was also broadcast via shortwave radio to 58 other countries by the World Wide Broadcasting Foundation. ''The Greatest Story Ever Told'', the title of which was used for Fulton Oursler, Fulton Oursler's 1949 book, used dramatized sketches to depict events in the life of Jesus Christ. As in the book, the words spoken by Jesus in the radio program came directly from the Bible. The premiere episode was "Parable of the Good Samaritan". The program was sponsored by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, but it lacked commercials, having the sponsorship announced only at the end of each episode. Norman Rose
Norman Rose (June 23, 1917 – November 12, 2004) was an American actor, film narrator and radio announcer whose velvety baritone was often called "the Voice of God" by colleagues. He was best known as the narrator's voice in the fictitious coffee grower's Juan Valdez Colombian coffee television commercials and the announcer-narrator of NBC's '' Dimension X''. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rose started acting while a student at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Rose honed his craft at the Actors Studio Drama School in New York, then landed parts in plays on and off-Broadway. Rose was the narrator for the satirical 1972 hit song ''Deteriorata'', which was recorded by comedy group National Lampoon for the album ''Radio Dinner''. William Stoess
William Charles Stoess (1902 – 1953) was an American music arranger, musician, conductor and composer. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Stoess of Cincinnati, Ohio. Stoess was a violin soloist and an announcer on WLW radio in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began conducting a small ensemble there as early as 1921. In 1923, he became that station's first full-time music director, and he held that position for both WLW and WSAI (also in Cincinnati) from 1928 to 1937. Under Stoess's direction and station owner Powel Crosley Jr.'s leadership the music program grew to over 100 staff members by 1932 and was broadcast throughout the United States, earning WLW the nickname "The Nation's Station". Stoess is credited with the early development of the soundtrack for the radio dramas produced at WLW.[2] These dramas were nicknamed "soap operas" in reference to WLW's close relationship with sponsors Procter and Gamble.
