''The Great Well'' is a 1924 British silent drama film directed by Henry Kolker and starring Thurston Hall, Seena Owen and Lawford Davidson. It was based on the 1923 play ''The Great Well'' by Alfred Sutro. Henry Kolker
Joseph Henry Kolker (November 13, 1874 ome sources 1870– July 15, 1947) was an American stage and film actor and director. Early years Kolker was born in Quincy, Illinois. Career Kolker, like fellow actors Richard Bennett and Robert Warwick, had a substantial stage career before entering silent films. He began acting professionally in stock theater in 1895. On stage he appeared opposite actresses such as Edith Wynne Matthison, Bertha Kalich and Ruth Chatterton. Kolker began acting in films in 1915. He is best remembered for his movie roles, including one in the ground-breaking Pre-Code film ''Baby Face'' (1933) as an elderly CEO. Another well-remembered part is as Mr. Seton, father of Katharine Hepburn and Lew Ayres in the 1938 film ''Holiday'' directed by George Cukor. Kolker entered films as an actor in 1915 and eventually tried his hand at directing. Hugh Dempster (3 August 1900 – 30 April 1987) was a British theatre and film actor. Born in London, Dempster made his stage debut in 1920, and began his screen career in the silent film era. His credits included ''Vice Versa'', ''Anna Karenina'', ''The Winslow Boy'', '' The Fan'', '' Scrooge'', '' The House Across the Lake'' and ''The Ghost Train'' (short film). Thirty-six years separated Dempster's first and last appearances on Broadway. He debuted in the 1929 melodrama ''Rope's End'' by Patrick Hamilton and in 1965 replaced Peter Sallis as Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes-inspired musical ''Baker Street''.
