Hugh Dempster
Hugh Dempster (3 August 1900 – 30 April 1987) was a British theatre and film actor. Born in London, Dempster made his stage debut in 1920, and began his screen career in the silent film era. His credits included ''Vice Versa'', ''Anna Karenina'', ''The Winslow Boy'', '' The Fan'', '' Scrooge'', '' The House Across the Lake'' and ''The Ghost Train'' (short film). Thirty-six years separated Dempster's first and last appearances on Broadway. He debuted in the 1929 melodrama ''Rope's End'' by Patrick Hamilton and in 1965 replaced Peter Sallis as Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes-inspired musical ''Baker Street''. Dempster died in Chicago, Illinois. ''The House Across the Lake'' is a 1954 British crime film directed by Ken Hughes and starring Alex Nicol, Hillary Brooke, Sid James and Susan Stephen. ''Music Hath Charms'' is a 1935 British musical comedy film directed by Thomas Bentley, Walter Summers, Arthur B. Woods and Alexander Esway. It stars Henry Hall with the BBC Dance Orchestra, Carol Goodner and Arthur Margetson. It was given a trade show in October 1935 and went on full release in March the following year. Baker Street (musical)
''Baker Street'' is a 1965 musical with a book by Jerome Coopersmith and music and lyrics by Marian Grudeff and Raymond Jessel. Background Loosely based on the 1891 Sherlock Holmes story " A Scandal in Bohemia" by Arthur Conan Doyle with elements of "The Final Problem" and " The Empty House" as well, it is set in and around London in 1897, the year in which England celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria (an event marked by an elaborate royal procession depicted by Bil Baird's marionettes). The musical veers from Conan Doyle's work in that Irene Adler becomes an associate of Holmes rather than his opponent, thus allowing an element of romance between the two. John Watson (Sherlock Holmes)
John H. Watson, known as Dr. Watson, is a fictional character in the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Along with Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson first appeared in the novel ''A Study in Scarlet'' (1887). The last work by Doyle featuring Watson and Holmes is the short story "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" (1927), but that is not the last story in the timeline of the series, which is "His Last Bow" (1917). Patrick Hamilton (dramatist)
Anthony Walter Patrick Hamilton (17 March 1904 – 23 September 1962) was an English playwright and novelist. He was well regarded by Graham Greene and J. B. Priestley, and study of his novels has been revived because of their distinctive style, deploying a Dickensian narrative voice to convey aspects of inter-war London street culture. They display a strong sympathy for the poor, as well as an acerbic black humour. Doris Lessing wrote in ''The Times'' in 1968: "Hamilton was a marvellous novelist who's grossly neglected".
