The Great Unraveling (band)
The Great Unraveling was an American post-punk rock band from Baltimore, Maryland. The band was fronted by Tonie Joy of Moss Icon, Universal Order of Armageddon, and Born Against. They were active from 1995 to 1997. History The Great Unraveling was founded by Joy, bassist Anthony Scott Malat (also of Universal Order of Armageddon), and drummer Randy Davis. Following the success of Universal Order of Armageddon, they quickly gained a small but devoted national fan base. Their group first released a 7" on the Vermiform Records imprint, run by Sam McPheeters of Born Against. The Olympia-based label Kill Rock Stars released the band's self-titled debut album, recorded by Steve Albini. The group also released a second 7" of material on Joy's Vermin Scum label. Davis departed the band late in their career, and was replaced by Universal Order of Armageddon drummer Brooks Headley. Tonie Joy
Anthony R. "Tonie" Joy is an American musician based in Baltimore, Maryland. Joy is known for his work in various underground rock and post-hardcore bands. He ran the independent record label Vermin Scum from 1989 until 2001. Musical career Having been inspired by his father Bill's early '70s acid rock band Grok and previous group The Verdicts, Joy began playing music as a teenager. In 1986 he co-founded Moss Icon which is known as an early influence on the hardcore punk rock splinter genre known as "emotive hardcore" or emo. Moss Icon were active until 1991, briefly in 2001, and occasionally since 2007. In 1990 Joy played guitar in Breathing Walker, a band containing members of Moss Icon as well as other musicians. The Thumbs
The Thumbs were an American punk rock band from Baltimore, Maryland. They were active from 1995 until approximately 2002. They were known for having an intense touring ethic, having completed nine U.S. tours, and two Japanese tours between 1997 and 2001. The band was formed by Mike Hall, Bobby Borte, and Mark Minnig, however Hall and Borte remained the only constant members amidst constant drummer changes. Tear gas, also known as a lachrymator agent or lachrymator (), sometimes colloquially known as "mace" after the early commercial aerosol, is a chemical weapon that stimulates the nerves of the lacrimal gland in the eye to produce tears. In addition, it can cause severe eye and respiratory pain, skin irritation, bleeding, and blindness. Common lachrymators both currently and formerly used as tear gas include pepper spray (OC gas), PAVA spray (nonivamide), CS gas, CR gas, CN gas (phenacyl chloride), bromoacetone, xylyl bromide and Mace (a branded mixture). Wrangler Brutes
The Wrangler Brutes were an American hardcore punk band formed in 2003 in Los Angeles, California. History Wrangler Brutes were formed around vocalist Sam McPheeters (ex-Born Against, Men's Recovery Project), drummer Brooks Headley (ex-Born Against, Universal Order of Armageddon, (Young) Pioneers), guitarist Andy Coronado (of Skull Kontrol, Monorchid, Nazti Skinz, Glass Candy) and bassist Cundo Bermudez (of Nazti Skinz and Fast Forward). The band sold over 1,000 copies of their self-released, self-titled cassette in nine months. This release was followed by a 7" record and a full-length LP, ''Zulu'', recorded in May 2004 with Steve Albini. Steve Albini (pronounced ; born July 22, 1962) is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago. In 2018, Albini estimated that he had worked on several thousand albums over his career. He has worked with acts such as Nirvana, Pixies, the Breeders, PJ Harvey, and former Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Sam McPheeters (born 1969) is an American artist, journalist, novelist, and performer. Early life Raised in Albany, New York, Albany, New York (state), New York, he became a published author at age 12, with ''Travelers' Tales'', a collection of regional folklore. Music In 1985, McPheeters grew active with the hardcore punk scene, producing several fanzines and organizing local concerts. After moving to New York City in 1987, he co-founded Born Against in 1989 and the Vermiform Records label in 1990. Brooks Headley
Brooks Headley is an American musician and chef, best known as the drummer in several hardcore punk and indie rock bands. Headley was executive pastry chef at Del Posto, a ''New York Times''-rated four-star restaurant, in New York City. He left Del Posto to open a vegetarian burger bar, Superiority Burger. Musical career Headley played drums in the Baltimore-area hardcore/emo band Universal Order of Armageddon from 1992 to 1994. With Universal Order of Armageddon bandmate Tonie Joy, he also joined the final lineup of the political hardcore band Born Against in 1993. Universal Order Of Armageddon
Universal Order of Armageddon was an American hardcore band, active from 1992 to 1994 and reformed in 2010. History The band formed in September 1992. By early 1993, after quickly gaining a small but devoted following, they recorded and toured the East Coast. They became known for their extreme short chaotic performances, which sometimes resulted in complete destruction. Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout! Records) was so impressed by their live performance that he stated in a magazine column that punk bands should take note of U.O.A. and bring back this type of energy into punk rock. Drummer Brooks Headley once said, "Our live shows are like turning on a vacuum cleaner for like ten minutes". They went on to release records on indie labels such as Kill Rock Stars, Gravity, and Jade Tree.
