The Folly Of Desire
''The Shulamite'' is an Edwardian drama, or melodrama, based on a novel of the same name. It played in London and New York in 1906 with Lena Ashwell in the lead role. It tells of a South African farmer's wife trapped in an unhappy marriage who falls in love with a visiting Englishman. In a dramatic scene the husband is killed. The death is made to seem an accident, but the lovers must part. Later the play was changed to give it a happy ending. ''The Shulamite'' was well received in London, but had limited success in the USA. It was made into a silent film '' The Shulamite'' in 1915, later renamed as ''The Folly of Desire'', and in 1921 was made into the silent film ''Under the Lash'' with Gloria Swanson. Lena Ashwell
Lena Margaret Ashwell, Lady Simson ( Pocock; 28 September 1872 – 13 March 1957) was a British actress and theatre manager and producer, known as the first to organise large-scale entertainment for troops at the front, which she did during World War I. After the war she created the Lena Ashwell Players. Biography She was born Lena Margaret Pocock' on the '' Wellesley'' while anchored in the River Tyne at North Shields, at the time under her father's 'command' as a home for “boys 'unconvicted of crime' but under suspicion”. Ashwell's father was Commander Charles Ashwell Boteler Pocock, Royal Navy (March 1829–February 1899), a nephew of Nicholas Pocock, and her mother was Sarah Margaret Stevens (December 1839–May 1887), who died as a result of an accident in Canada. Sam Wood

Mahlon Hamilton
Mahlon Preston Hamilton, Jr. (June 15, 1880 – June 20, 1960), was an American stage and screen actor. He was the son of a bartender born in Baltimore, Maryland, the eldest of four children, with the rest of the siblings being girls. Census records indicate his mother died sometime around 1899. Hamilton served with the Maryland National Guard and attended the Maryland Agricultural College (today the University of Maryland, College Park) before turning to acting. From 1908 through 1914, Hamilton appeared in such plays as ''The Great Question'', ''Israel'', ''When Claudia Smiles'', ''The Chaperon'', and ''Overnight''. He began his film career during the silent era, appearing in more than 90 films between 1914 and 1950. Personal life and death Hamilton married Aleta Farnum in 1918; the marriage ended in divorce in 1925. Russell McCaskill Simpson (June 17, 1880 – December 12, 1959) was an American character actor. Early life Russell Simpson was born on June 17, 1880 (other sources indicate 1877) in Danville, California. He attended grammar school in the Danville District in Contra Costa County, California; he graduated on July 2, 1892. At age 18, Simpson prospected for gold in Alaska. He began taking acting classes in Seattle, Washington. He was married to Gertrude Aller from New York City on January 19, 1910. Career By 1909, he had gone into the theatre. He appeared in at least two plays on Broadway between 1909 and 1912, and made his motion picture debut in Cecil B. DeMille's 1914 original film version of '' The Virginian'' in a bit part. Gerald Ames
Gerald Ames (12 September 1880 – 2 July 1933) was a British actor, film director and Olympic fencer. Ames was born in Blackheath, London in 1880 and first took up acting in 1905. He was a popular leading man in the post-First World War cinema, appearing in more than sixty films between his debut in 1914 and his retirement from the screen in 1928 in a career entirely encompassing the silent era. He was also a regular stage actor who took on many leading roles in the theatre. He competed in the individual épée event at the 1912 Summer Olympics. He died in 1933 after falling down the steps of Knightsbridge tube station and suffering a heart attack. He was married to the actress Mary Dibley. Manora Alice Thew (12 April 1891 – 12 April 1987) was an English actress. She was born in Negapatam, Madras Presidency, British India, the daughter of Alice Maude ''née'' Turner (1865–1925) and Cuthbert Harrison Thew (1859–1928). In 1911 she was a student at a boarding school in Frimley in Surrey. In 1915 she married John Davidson (1890–1954), a medical doctor, and with him had a daughter, Manora Joy Davidson (1920–1999). After the birth of her daughter she largely retired from acting. In 1939 she and her family were living at 140 Manchester Road in Sheffield. Manora Thew died in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England in 1987. In her will she left £116,050. George Loane Tucker
George Loane Tucker (June 12, 1872 – June 20, 1921) was an American actor, silent film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor. Career Tucker was born George S. Loane in Chicago to George Loane and stage actress Ethel Tucker. After graduating from the University of Chicago, he got a job as a railroad clerk. He was chief clerk for the Maintenance of Way. Tucker was later the youngest man to be promoted to Contracting Freight Agent. After his first wife died while giving birth to the couple's son, Tucker quit his job. On the advice of friends, he began acting in stage productions. By the mid-1910s, films were becoming a more popular draw for audiences which led Tucker to film acting and scenario writing. In 1911, he wrote a script for the short drama film ''Their First Misunderstanding''. The film, which starred Mary Pickford, was a surprise hit.
