Apollo Theatre (42nd Street)
The Apollo Theatre was a Broadway theatre whose entrance was located at 223 West 42nd Street in Manhattan, New York City, while the theatre proper was on 43rd Street. It was demolished in 1996 and provided part of the site for the new Ford Center for the Performing Arts, now known as the Lyric Theatre. History The Apollo was built in 1920 by the Selwyn Brothers in tandem with the Times Square Theatre, and both share a unified facade on West 42nd Street. Designed by Eugene De Rosa, the theaters had entrances on 42nd Street, but the Apollo's auditorium was actually on 43rd Street. The theater sat 1,200. The Apollo was initially a musical theatre venue for such works as the Gershwin musical '' Strike Up the Band'' and several editions of ''George White's Scandals'', featuring W.C. ''Orphans of the Storm'' is a 1921 American silent drama film by D. W. Griffith set in late-18th-century France, before and during the French Revolution. The last Griffith film to feature both Lillian and Dorothy Gish, it was a commercial failure, following box-office hits such as ''The Birth of a Nation'' and '' Broken Blossoms''. Like his earlier films, Griffith used historical events to comment on contemporary events, in this case the French Revolution to warn about the rise of Bolshevism. ''Bent'' is a 1979 play by Martin Sherman. It revolves around the persecution of gays in Nazi Germany, and takes place during and after the Night of the Long Knives. The title of the play refers to the slang word "bent" used in some European countries to refer to homosexuals. When the play was first performed, there was only a trickle of historical research or even awareness about the Nazi persecution of homosexuals. In some regards, the play helped increase that historical research and education in the 1980s and 1990s. Steve Mills (October 9, 1895 - March 9, 1988) was a Burlesque performer. Although he did stints in vaudeville, he was known and spent his lifetime on the Burlesque and Legitimate stage. Biography Mills was born on October 9, 1895 in Boston, Massachusetts. His career in vaudeville began in 1910 when he appeared at an amateur night hosted by Fred Allen and Benny Rubin. He married Roberta Lean (later Abagail Mills). With his first wife, Dorothy (Rosenthal) Mills, they had a daughter, Rachel Hope Mills. He formed a comedy team called the Castle Trio around 1917. In 1924 he was in ''Whiz Bang Babies'' and in 1926 he played the lead in Miss Tabasco. He next was a headliner for Bill Minsky at the Winter Garden Theater in Manhattan. Georgia Sothern (1913–1981), born Hazel Anderson, was a burlesque dancer and vaudeville performer. She was known for her striptease performances. She gave an interview to the ''Harvard Crimson'' during a trip to the Old Howard Athenaeum in Boston during 1939. She toured New York Philadelphia, Boston, Buffalo, and Miami. She was a red-head. Joey Faye (born Joseph Antony Palladino, July 12, 1909 or 1910 or 1902– April 26, 1997) was an American comedian and actor. Born in New York City, he gained fame as a comic in vaudeville and claimed that he created two of vaudeville's more renowned pieces of business, "Floogle Street" (a.k.a. Ann Corio (born Ann Coiro; November 29, 1909 – March 1, 1999) was a prominent American burlesque stripper and actress. Her original surname was Coiro, changing it to Corio for stage purposes and because some family members did not approve of her profession. Biography Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she was one of twelve children of Italian immigrant parents. While still in her teens, Corio's good looks and shapely physique landed her showgirl roles that led to her becoming a hugely popular striptease artist. Eltinge 42nd Street Theatre
The Empire Theatre (originally the Eltinge Theatre) is a former Broadway theater at 234 West 42nd Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1912, the theater was designed by Thomas W. Lamb for the Hungarian-born impresario A. H. Woods. It was originally named for female impersonator Julian Eltinge, a performer with whom Woods was associated. The theater was relocated about west of its original location in 1998. Since 2000, the original theater building has served as the entrance to the AMC Empire 25, a multiplex operated by AMC Theatres. The facade of the Empire Theatre is made of terracotta and is square in shape, with relatively little ornamentation. The center of the facade contains a three-story arch, which was intended to resemble a Roman triumphal arch; a fourth story was used as offices.
