The Edgewater (Madison, Wisconsin)
The Edgewater in Madison, Wisconsin is a hotel which opened in 1948. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as part of the Mansion Hill Historic District. It has been stated to be a "superb" example of Art Moderne architecture designed by Kenosha architect Lawrence Monberg. Its NRHP nomination states: There are five Art Moderne buildings in the Mansion Hill district. In Wisconsin, Art Moderne was built between 1930 and 1950. Inspired by advances in technology and industrialization, Art Moderne has a horizonal, stream-lined appearance. This look is achieved through the use of smooth wall finishes, flat roofs, curving walls and horizontal bands of windows. Three of the Art Moderne buildings in Mansion Hill are superb examples of the style. All three were designed by Lawrence Monberg, then living in Kenosha.
