The Crocodile (film)
''The Crocodile'' ( km, នេសាទក្រពើ, ; ) is a 2005 Cambodian horror-action film written and directed by Mao Ayuth. First released in July 2005, it had been periodically re-released in Cambodian cinemas since July 2007, and remains unreleased on DVD or digitally. Plot A group of villagers live by a river heavily infested with crocodiles which have killed many of their relatives. A local farmer, San, decides to become a crocodile hunter following the death of his wife, family members, neighbours and friends, with the aim of finding and killing the Crocodile King. Production and release The film's budget was US$100, 000, a high level for a Cambodian production; a significant amount of this went towards the film's lead actor, Preap Sovath. Mao Ayuth
Mao Ayuth ( km, ម៉ៅ អាយុទ្ធ; 8 July 1944 – 15 April 2021) was a Cambodian filmmaker and politician. One of the few filmmakers to survive the Khmer Rouge regime, he was noted, alongside Dy Saveth, Yvon Hem, and Bun Yim, as connecting Cinema of Cambodia, contemporary Cambodian cinema with its Cinema of Cambodia, golden age of the 1960s and 1970s. Dy Saveth ( km, ឌី សាវ៉េត, UNGEGN: ; born 1944) is a Cambodian actress and first Miss Cambodia (1959) often referred to as the "actress of tears". She is "one of the most beloved actresses from the 1960s era of Cambodian film". Biography A rising star of Cambodian cinema Dy Saveth was born in Cambodia in March 4, 1944 in a family of artists where women, at least since her grandmother, had been dancers of the Palace in the Royal Ballet. Democratic Kampuchea
Kampuchea ( km, កម្ពុជា ), officially known as Democratic Kampuchea (DK; km, កម្ពុជាប្រជាធិបតេយ្យ ) from 5 January 1976, was a one-party totalitarian state which encompassed modern-day Cambodia and existed from 1975 to 1979. It was controlled by the Khmer Rouge (KR), the name popularly given to the followers of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK), and was founded when KR forces defeated the Khmer Republic of Lon Nol in 1975. Cambodian Horror Films
Horror films in Cambodia, first popular in the 1970s, have received renewed attention in Cambodian film making since the resurgence of the local industry in 2003. Horror is one of three popular genres into which most Cambodian films can be loosely grouped, the other two being period pieces and melodrama/romantic drama. The fledgling Cambodian industry of the mid 2000s looked to capitalize on the world-wide popularity of Japanese horror films which have heavily influenced Cambodian horror films. Common themes are ghost or spirit hauntings, possession, folk mythology and revenge by supernatural means. The storytelling takes a slower pace than Western horror and relies on suspense, a pervasive sense of doom and dread, and psychologically disturbing events and situations.
