The Company (Hawaiian Organized Crime)
The Company, also called the ''Hawaiian Syndicate'', is the name given to an organized crime syndicate based in Hawaii that controlled criminal activities in the state from the late 1960s to the mid 1990s. History Through the 1960s organized crime in Hawaii was controlled primarily by local Asian criminal organizations, mainly Chinese Triads, Japanese Yakuza, Korean Kkangpae, and Samoan criminal outfits. The first change came when a local Korean named George Chung formed his own criminal organization in 1962, recruiting among local Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Samoans, and Native Hawaiians. The smaller ethnic gangs all vied for control of organized crime, leading to disorganized clashes, over time Chung was able to create an environment where every gang could do business. Organized crime (or organised crime) is a category of transnational, national, or local groupings of highly centralized enterprises run by criminals to engage in illegal activity, most commonly for profit. While organized crime is generally thought of as a form of illegal business, some criminal organizations, such as terrorist groups, rebel forces, and separatists, are politically motivated. Many criminal organizations rely on fear or terror to achieve their goals or aims as well as to maintain control within the organization and may adopt tactics commonly used by authoritarian regimes to maintain power. Charles Marsland
Charles Marsland (1923-2007) was a Honolulu attorney who served as the first elected Prosecuting Attorney of Honolulu from 1981 to 1988. He is best known for his aggressive prosecution of the Hawaiian Mob during the mid 1980s, which took place after the murder of his son, which was allegedly connected to organized crime. Early life and education Marsland, the grandson of Norwegian immigrants to Hawaii, was born on April 11, 1923. His father, Charles F. Marsland Sr., was a deep-sea diver and his mother Sadie was a schoolteacher. Marsland attended the prestigious Punahou School and, upon graduation, attended Tufts College in Medford, Massachusetts. McNeil Island Corrections Center
The McNeil Island Corrections Center (MICC) was a prison in the Pacific Northwest, northwest United States, operated by the Washington State Department of Corrections. Alema Leota
Alema Leota (March 10, 1928 – May 11, 2008) was an alleged Hawaiian organized crime boss of Samoan descent during the 1960s and 1970s who led an unsuccessful nonpartisan campaign for the Governor of Hawaii during the 1978 election. He was defeated by former Governor George Ariyoshi during the general election. Biography Leota was born and raised in Lāʻie, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu, to Samoan immigrant parents, Aivao and Matala Leota. His parents were among the first Samoan immigrants to settle in Hawaii in 1919 after their conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
