The Celebration
''The Celebration'' ( da, Festen) is a 1998 Danish dark comedy-drama film directed by Thomas Vinterberg and produced by Nimbus Film. The film tells the story of a family gathering to celebrate their father's 60th birthday, juggling subjects of death, child abuse, trauma, and family. Vinterberg was inspired to write it with Mogens Rukov, based on a hoax broadcast by a Danish radio station.It was the first Dogme 95 film, an artistic movement created by Danish directors Vinterberg and Lars von Trier. The movement preferred simple and analog production values to allow for the highlighting of plot and performance. ''Festen'' was selected as the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Thomas Vinterberg
Thomas Vinterberg (; born 19 May 1969) is a Danish film director who, along with Lars von Trier, co-founded the Dogme 95 movement in filmmaking, which established rules for simplifying movie production. He is best known for the films ''The Celebration'' (1998), '' Submarino'' (2010), '' The Hunt'' (2012), '' Far from the Madding Crowd'' (2015), and '' Another Round'' (2020). For ''Another Round'', he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, the former became the first Danish filmmaker nominated for Best Director. Dogme 95 is a 1995 avant-garde filmmaking movement founded by the Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, who created the "Dogme 95 Manifesto" and the "Vows of Chastity" ( da, kyskhedsløfter). These were rules to create films based on the traditional values of story, acting, and theme, and excluding the use of elaborate special effects or technology. It was supposedly created as an attempt to "take back power for the directors as artists", as opposed to the studio. Bjarne Henriksen (born 18 January 1959) is a Danish film and television actor. Biography Henriksen was born in Såderup, Funen in 1959. Klaus Bondam (born 19 November 1963, in Aakirkeby) is a Danish actor and politician. Acting career Bondam has been the manager two theatres, (1996–2003) and Folketeatret (2003–2005), and been administrative manager of Mungo Park theatre (1995–1996). Klaus Bondam began acting on stage in 1988. His acting breakthrough came in the movie ''Festen'' in 1998, playing the German toastmaster at the party. "Jeg har set en rigtig negermand" ("I have seen a real negro man") is a Danish children's song that became extremely popular in the 1970s. It was first sung by four-year-old Bo Andersen with Familien Andersen in 1970, and quickly gained platinum status in Denmark, selling 165,000 copies. Background In 1970, the Andersen Family won the "best Danish band" competition sponsored by the newspaper ''Ekstra Bladet''. As a result, the family won a recording contract with Polydor Records, and released "Jeg har set en rigtig negermand" as its first single. At the same time, the family was performing under contract at Tivoli Gardens, increasing the family's popularity, especially that of "Little Bo", the 4-year-old lead singer who would go on to achieve fame as a child actor.
