The Case Against 8
''The Case Against 8'' is an American documentary film, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 18, 2014. Directed and produced by Ben Cotner and Ryan White, the film documents the legal battle to overturn California's Proposition 8, focusing in particular on behind-the-scenes footage of David Boies and Theodore Olson during the '' Perry v. Schwarzenegger'' case. Cast Release Cotner and White won the Directing Award: U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was also subsequently screened at the 2014 SXSW festival, where it won an Audience Award. The film screened at the 2014 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto, Ontario and went on to screen within such festivals as SXSW and Maryland Film Festival. Ryan White is a documentary producer and director best known for his Netflix documentary film ''Pamela, a love story'', Amazon Prime's '' Good Night Oppy'', which won five Critics Choice Awards including Best Documentary and Best Director, and his Emmy-nominated Netflix series ''The Keepers.'' White's previous films include the HBO movie ''The Case Against 8'', which won Sundance's Directing Award and was nominated for two Emmys, the documentary film '' Ask Dr. Ruth,'' and ''Coded'', which was shortlisted for the Academy Award. 2008 California Proposition 8
Proposition 8, known informally as Prop 8, was a California ballot proposition and a state constitutional amendment intended to ban same-sex marriage; it passed in the November 2008 California state elections and was later overturned in court. The proposition was created by opponents of same-sex marriage in advance of the California Supreme Court's May 2008 appeal ruling, '' In re Marriage Cases'', which followed the short-lived 2004 same-sex weddings controversy and found the previous ban on same-sex marriage ( Proposition 22, 2000) unconstitutional. Proposition 8 was ultimately ruled unconstitutional by a federal court (on different grounds) in 2010, although the court decision did not go into effect until June 26, 2013, following the conclusion of proponents' appeals.
