The Bronze Buckaroo
''The Bronze Buckaroo'' is a 1939 American Western film directed by Richard C. Kahn. It is one of the race films made by African-American directors and performers for African-American audiences. ''The Bronze Buckaroo'' stars black cowboy singer Herb Jeffries, here billed as Herbert Jeffrey. Plot Cowboy Bob Blake receives a letter from his friend Joe Jackson, asking for help. Blake and his men travel to Jackson's ranch, only to discover from Jackson's sister Betty that Joe has been missing for three weeks. Meanwhile, Jackson's ranch hand (Slim Perkins) is learning to use ventriloquism to make the farm animals talk, and tries to convince the gullible Dusty to buy a talking mule. Blake discovers that Jackson is being held by a local land grabbing rancher, Buck Thorne, who (with his partner Pete) has discovered gold on Jackson's ranch. Spencer Williams (July 14, 1893 – December 13, 1969) was an American actor and filmmaker. He portrayed Andy on TV's '' The Amos 'n' Andy Show'' and directed films including the 1941 race film ''The Blood of Jesus''. Williams was a pioneering African-American film producer and director. Early career Williams (who was sometimes billed as Spencer Williams Jr.) was born in Vidalia, Louisiana, where the family lived on Magnolia Street. As a youngster, he attended Wards Academy in Natchez, Mississippi. He moved to New York City when he was a teenager and secured work as call boy for the theatrical impresario Oscar Hammerstein. Jed Buell (May 21, 1897 - September 29, 1961) was an American film producer, director, and screenwriter who specialized in low-budget B pictures in a variety of subjects including singing cowboy films featuring midgets and black actors. Career Buell, born in Denver, Colorado to Dora Phelps and William J. Buell, was educated at the Corona School and North Denver High School. He began his film career as treasurer of the Denver Orpheum Theatre and Denham Theatre as well as the business manager of Denver's Elitch Theatre.
