The Big City (1928 Film)
''The Big City'' is a 1928 American silent crime film directed by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney. Waldemar Young wrote the screenplay, based on a story by Tod Browning. The film is now lost. The last known print of the film had been sent to Australia in the late 1950s. The film was returned to MGM and placed in their vaults where it was destroyed in the same vault fire that also claimed '' London After Midnight'' and ''The Tower of Lies'' in 1965. A short trailer for the film survives at Cinémathèque française in France, but it does not include any actual footage from the film itself. Stills exist showing Chaney in the Chuck Collins role. This was Betty Compson's only film at MGM. The sets were designed by Cedric Gibbons. The set for Chuck Collins' nightclub was also used for the nightclub scenes in ''While the City Sleeps''. Clinton Lyle, who plays a gangster in ''The Big City'', was one of Chaney's closest personal friends. The film was in production from October 2 ... Tod Browning
Tod Browning (born Charles Albert Browning Jr.; July 12, 1880 – October 6, 1962) was an American film director, film actor, screenwriter, vaudeville performer, and carnival sideshow and circus entertainer. He directed a number of films of various genres between 1915 and 1939, but was primarily known for horror films, and was often cited in the trade press as the Edgar Allan Poe of cinema. Browning's career spanned the silent film and sound film eras. He is known as the director of ''Dracula (1931 English-language film), Dracula'' (1931), ''Freaks (1932 film), Freaks'' (1932), and his silent film collaborations with Lon Chaney and Priscilla Dean. John George (actor)
John George ( ar, جون جورج; born Tufei Fatella, January 20, 1898 – August 25, 1968) was an actor who appeared in at least 130 movies from 1916 to 1960. George worked in films of all genres alongside countless stars although often for only the briefest of appearances, uncredited. Early years George was born in Aleppo, Syria. Little is known about his early life but he immigrated to the United States around 1911 and searched for his mother and sisters who seem to have settled in the Nashville, Tennessee, area. Film Eventually George found his way to Los Angeles and the early silent film industry. George may have begun his career in the Joseph De Grasse movie ''Bobbie of the Ballet'' (1916) as an uncredited "tenement dweller". George may have even appeared earlier than that in the 1915 serial ''The Broken Coin'' unbilled, as an actor who strongly favors him appears in a still photo from the chapter play with Francis Ford and Grace Cunard in Daniel Blum's ''Pictorial Histo ...
