The Beta Band (album)
''The Beta Band'' is the debut studio album of the Beta Band, released in June 1999 by Regal Records. The album followed the critically acclaimed compilation of their first three EPs titled ''The Three E.P.'s'' (1998). With high anticipation for ''The Beta Band'', the band originally planned to record the album in four separate continents, but financial constraints slimmed the recording locations down; however, the album was still recorded in a variety of locations. The band approached creating the songs in a variety of ways, sometimes forming songs from single melodies, sometimes bringing together other strands of music, among other forms. The album builds upon the experimentation of their EPs, and is often seen as a particularly intricate, experimental and layered album, with a variety of different influences, sound effects, instrumentation and song structures. The Beta Band were a Scottish musical group formed in 1996. Their style was described as being "folktronica", although it was mainly a blend of folk, psychedelia, electronica, experimental rock and trip hop, often involving stylistic experimentation. Despite inner conflict and the eventual decline of the group, they became critically acclaimed after releasing their first few recordings and achieved a cult following as they began releasing studio albums, before disbanding in 2004. They were praised by members of both Radiohead and Oasis, the former of which chose them to open for their concerts in 2001. In music, a drone is a harmonic or monophonic effect or accompaniment where a note or chord is continuously sounded throughout most or all of a piece. Despite being almost 40mins long and originally being released on 2 x 12" records, the release is still considered an E.P. by both the band and the press. ''Champion Versions'' is the debut EP by the Beta Band, originally released in 1997 on 12" vinyl only. The EP consists of songs featured on the original demo tape the band had sent to Phil Brown, an A&R rep for EMI, which landed the group a record deal with Regal Records. It was later included in its entirety on the 1998 compilation ''The Three E.P.'s'', along with ''The Patty Patty Sound'' and ''Los Amigos del Beta Bandidos''. It is the only Beta Band recording to feature founding members Gordon Anderson and Steve Duffield, who both left shortly before its release. ''Champion Versions'', along with the other two original EPs from the Beta Band, long out of print on vinyl, were re-issued as part of Record Store Day 2013.
