The Bells (1918 Film)
''The Bells'' is a lost 1918 American silent drama film released by Pathé Exchange. It was adapted from the 1867 French play ''Le Juif Polonais'' (''The Polish Jew'') by Erckmann-Chatrian and an 1871 English-language version, '' The Bells'', by Leopold Lewis. The latter was a favorite vehicle for actor Henry Irving. This silent film stars Frank Keenan and Lois Wilson. The story was remade in 1926 as '' The Bells'' with Lionel Barrymore and Boris Karloff. Plot As reported in a film publication, Mathias, the struggling innkeeper in an Alsatian hamlet, murders a wealthy Jew who comes to spend a night at the inn in order to pay off debts and a mortgage. The murderer is never discovered, but the season passes into local history as the "Polish Jew's winter." Mathias prospers, and years later his daughter becomes engaged to the captain of the gendarmes. Boris Karloff
William Henry Pratt (23 November 1887 – 2 February 1969), better known by his stage name Boris Karloff (), was an English actor. His portrayal of Frankenstein's monster in the horror film ''Frankenstein'' (1931) (his 82nd film) established him as a horror icon, and he reprised the role for the sequels ''Bride of Frankenstein'' (1935) and ''Son of Frankenstein'' (1939). He also appeared as Imhotep in ''The Mummy'' (1932), and voiced the Grinch in, as well as narrating, the animated television special of Dr. Seuss' ''How the Grinch Stole Christmas!'' (1966), which won him a Grammy Award. Aside from his numerous film roles (174 films), Karloff acted in many live stage plays and appeared on dozens of radio and television programs as well. ''The Burgomeister'' is a 1935 Australian film directed by Harry Southwell based on the 1867 play ''Le juif polonais'' (aka '' The Bells'') by Erckmann-Chatrian, adapted into English in 1871 by Leopold Lewis, previously filmed a number of times. ''The Burgomeister'' (1935) is considered a 'substantially lost' film, with only one sequence surviving. ''The Bells'' is a 1931 British drama film directed by Harcourt Templeman and Oscar Werndorff and starring Donald Calthrop, Jane Welsh, and Edward Sinclair. The film was originally released with the only film score written by Gustav Holst. It was based on the play ''Le Juif Polonais'' by Alexandre Chatrian and Emile Erckmann, and the English version, '' The Bells'' by Leopold Lewis. ''The Bells'' is a 1911 Australian feature-length silent film directed by W. J. Lincoln. It is based on the famous stage melodrama by Erckmann-Chatrian, adapted by Leopold Lewis, which in turn had been adapted for the Australian stage by W. J. Lincoln before he made it into a film. It is today considered a lost film. It was one of several films Lincoln made with the Tait family, who had produced ''The Story of the Kelly Gang''. According to Lincoln's obituary in ''The Bulletin'' it was one of Lincoln's best films. Plot Mathias (Arthur Styan) is an innkeeper in a village in Alsace, happily married to Catherine (Miss Grist) and with a daughter Annette (Nellie Bramley). Ida Lewis (actress)
Ida May Lewis (May 1848 - April 21, 1935) was an American stage and screen actress. She started in the theater when Daly and Wallack were the top manager impresarios. She later appeared in many silent films allegedly beginning with David Horsley studios in 1911. From 1913 she did much silent film work. She appeared in Frank Keenan's version of '' The Bells'' in 1918. Her final film was in 1932 in an uncredited role in the May Robson 'Grandma' segment of ''If I Had a Million''. Lewis died at her home in Los Angeles on April 21, 1935, and was buried somewhere in Hollywood Forever Cemetery as her listed plot had been removed by 1935. Carl Stockdale
Carl Stockdale also known as Carlton Stockdale (February 19, 1874 – March 15, 1953) was one of the longest-working Hollywood veteran actors, with a career dating from the early 1910s. He also made the difficult transition from silent films to talkies. Stockdale was born in Worthington, Minnesota, graduated from Minneapolis Central High School, and attended the University of North Dakota. Before he began working with films, Stockdale was a property man with a repertory theatrical company headed by his brother. He went on to act on stage in repertory theater and in vaudeville. Stockdale was in Hollywood as early as 1913 with a small role in Gilbert M. Anderson's ''Broncho Billy's Last Deed''. He worked with that film franchise for two years before joining D. W. Griffith's film company. He remained busy into the 1940s. His last film was released in 1943.
