The Bartered Bride (1932 Film)
''The Bartered Bride'' (german: Die verkaufte Braut) is a 1932 German musical comedy film directed by Max Ophüls and starring Jarmila Novotná, Otto Wernicke, and Karl Valentin. It is based on the comic opera of the same name by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. It was shot at the Bavaria Studios in Munich. The film's sets were designed by the art director Erwin Scharf. Plot ''The Bartered Bride'' is the comic misadventure of two mismatched couples. 1859 at a church consecration festival in Bohemia. The matchmaker Kezal wants to match the mayor's daughter Marie to Wenzel, the son of rich Micha. However, Marie falls in love with the post coach Hans and hides with him in the hustle and bustle of the church consecration festival. Max Ophüls
Maximillian Oppenheimer (; 6 May 1902 – 26 March 1957), known as Max Ophüls (; ), was a German-French film director who worked in Germany (1931–1933), France (1933–1940 and 1950–1957), and the United States (1947–1950). Comic opera, sometimes known as light opera, is a sung dramatic work of a light or comic nature, usually with a happy ending and often including spoken dialogue. Forms of comic opera first developed in late 17th-century Italy. By the 1730s, a new operatic genre, ''opera buffa'', emerged as an alternative to '' opera seria''. Therese Giehse (; 6 March 1898 – 3 March 1975), born Therese Gift, was a German actress. Born in Munich to German-Jews, Jewish parents, she first appeared on the stage in 1920. Ernst Ziegler
Ernst Ziegler (born Ernst Aldoff, 16 April 1894 – 11 April 1974) was a German film and television actor. Biography Ziegler began his film career in 1932, appearing in the German film '' Die verkaufte Braut'' (The Bartered Bride). He went on to act in other German films and on German television. In 1970, he appeared in the American film ''Something for Everyone'', starring Angela Lansbury. His final film role was as Grandpa George (Charlie Bucket's grandfather) in the 1971 film ''Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory''. By this time, Ziegler's health was deteriorating, and he was legally blind, partly as a result of being gassed during the First World War. Paul Kemp (actor)
Paul Kemp (20 May 1896 – 13 August 1953) was a German stage and film actor. Kemp worked as a piano accompaniest for silent films, and then served as an ambulance driver on the Western Front during the First World War. Post-war he moved into acting on the stage in Düsseldorf and Hamburg. His career really took off when he moved to Berlin in 1929, appearing in the hit stage version of the novel ''Menschen im Hotel'' by Vicki Baum. He made his film debut in 1930, shortly after the introduction of sound film. He appeared prolifically in German and Austrian films until his death in 1953. Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender (19 February 1897, Aachen – 13 February 1978, Nuremberg) was a German operatic baritone, particularly associated with Mozart and Verdi roles. He is considered to have been one of the best lyric baritones of the inter-war period. Life and career Domgraf-Fassbaender studied first in Berlin with Jacques Stuckgold and Paul Bruns, and later in Milan with the prominent Italian dramatic tenor Giuseppe Borgatti (who also taught the English tenor Heddle Nash). Erwin Scharf (art Director)
Erwin Scharf (1901–1972) was an Austrian art director. He worked in the German film industry during the Weimar Era, often collaborating with Robert Neppach on set designs. Because of his Jewish heritage he left Germany following the Nazi takeover in 1933, and spent the next five years working in a variety of European countries. This included the 1937 Carol Reed-directed film '' Who's Your Lady Friend?'' in Britain.Evans p.173 In 1938 he settled in the United States.
