The Archer (Lepcke)
The sculpture The Archer stands in the Jan Kochanowski Park in Bydgoszcz, facing the Polish Theater. It is one of the oldest preserved sculptures in the city, realized by Ferdinand Lepcke. The figure of ''The Archer'' is one of the most expressive symbols of Bydgoszcz. Four copies of the statue still exist in German cities. Description The statue has been designed by Berlin artist Ferdinand Lepcke. It is made of bronze and portrays a young naked woman, stretching a bow. The silhouette has classic proportions and athletic body. The character only wears Roman-like sandals, and stands on a pedestal made of pink granite. Dimensions of the sculpture are: 210 cm (height), 128 cm (width), 35 cm (depth). The archer figure itself is 175 cm tall, 77 cm at waist and 105 cm at hip. Jan Kochanowski Park is a green area covering 3,15 ha, located in downtown Bydgoszcz, Poland. It is part of the "Music district in Bydgoszcz" ( pl, Dzielnica muzyczna w Bydgoszczy) and is named after the Polish renaissance poet, Jan Kochanowski. Municipal Charter
A city charter or town charter (generically, municipal charter) is a legal document (''charter'') establishing a municipality such as a city or town. The concept developed in Europe during the Middle Ages. Traditionally the granting of a charter gave a settlement and its inhabitants the right to town privileges under the feudal system. Townspeople who lived in chartered towns were burghers, as opposed to serfs who lived in villages. Towns were often " free", in the sense that they were directly protected by the king or emperor, and were not part of a feudal fief. Freedom Monument, Bydgoszcz
Freedom Monument ( pl, Pomnik Wolności) is a monument in Bydgoszcz commemorating both the fallen Soviet and Polish soldiers who fought during the liberation of the city in January 1945, and the return of Bydgoszcz to Poland on 20 January 1920. The monument has a shape of an obelisk. At the base is a plaque with the inscription: "'Libera Civitas Bydgostiensis'" (City of Bydgoszcz Free). On the front wall of the monument are reliefs and plaques, and on other walls, among others, stands tombstone commemorating eleven Soviet soldiers killed . History Shortly after Nazis withdrew from Bydgoszcz in January 1945, corpses of soldiers killed in the fighting for the city needed a place to be buried. Those men from the Red Army were led by colonel Grigorij Bolszanin. The place of the burial was located near the spot where until 1919 stood the statue of Emperor William I on his horse. Piotr Triebler
Piotr Triebler (1898–1952), was a Polish sculptor whose works are associated with Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in general and with Bydgoszcz in particular. Biography Period in Silesia under German Empire rule Piotr Triebler was born on 22 November 1898 in Ligota Bialska, Opole region, part of then Prussian Province of Silesia. He was the son of Edward, a farmer, and Wiktoria, née Kopetzka. His family had a strong attachment to Polish feelings: Edward actively supported the Polish vote in the Upper Silesia plebiscite (1921) and was active in the Union of Poles in Germany. His mother Wiktoria came from a Polish peasant family. Lastly, his older brother took part in the second and third Silesian Uprisings of 1920 and 1921. Piotr, coming from a farming family, was supposed to be a locksmith. He even received his locksmith diploma when graduated from the local school in Ligota. Cyryl Ratajski
Cyryl Ratajski (3 March 1875 – 19 October 1942) was a Polish politician and lawyer. Life and career Ratajski was born in Zalesie Wielkie, then part of the German Empire, on 3 March 1875. He graduated from a high school in Poznań and studied law at the University of Berlin. After leaving university, he worked as a court clerk in Torgau. He opened his own law firm in Racibórz after passing a judge's exam in 1905. He moved back to Poznań in 1911 to look after his father-in-law's business. He became an envoy for the Supreme Popular Council to the Polish National Committee (1917–1919), Polish National Committee in Paris in January 1919. He served as mayor of Poznań between 1922 and 1924 and again between 1925 and 1934 as well as Minister of Interior between 1924 and 1925.
