''The Animal Kingdom'' () is a 2023 French-Belgian science fantasy dramatic adventure film directed by Thomas Cailley and written by Cailley and Pauline Munier. It stars Romain Duris, Paul Kircher and Adèle Exarchopoulos. It had its world premiere as the opening film of the Un Certain Regard section at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2023. It was released in France on 4 October 2023 to mostly positive reviews. It received a leading 12 nominations at the 49th César Awards, and won 5 awards: Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Original Music, Best Costume Design and Best Visual Effects. Synopsis In a world hit by a wave of mutations that are gradually transforming some humans into animals, François does everything he can to save his wife, who is affected by this mysterious condition. Thomas Cailley (born 29 April 1980) is a French screenwriter and film director. In 2014, he made his feature directorial debut with ''Love at First Fight (film), Love at First Fight'', which won three César Awards including César Award for Best First Feature Film, Best First Feature Film. Biography Born in Clermont-Ferrand, Cailley studied at Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux, Sciences Po Bordeaux. After completing general studies, he spent three years working in a company producing television documentaries. In 2007, he entered La Fémis, studying in the screenwriting department.
