''The Abduction from the Seraglio'' is a 1961 Australian TV version of Mozart's opera '' Die Entführung aus dem Serail'' and sung in English. It was one of a number of operas broadcast by the ABC in the early days of Australian television. Alan Burke (director)
Alan Burke (18 November 1923 – 28 August 2007) was an Australian writer and film director and producer. His credits include the musical ''Lola Montez''. Biography Burke was born in the Hawthorn suburb of Melbourne, Victoria in 1923. Burke was interested in theatre from a young age and began writing plays. One of them ''Follow Suit'' debuted in 1941. According to ''The Argus'' "Alan is aged only 17 years, but has been turning out plays so prolifically for the past 4 or 5 years that he must now be reckoned a veteran playwright. Most surprising of all is that there's nothing "youthful" in his writings. Most of his efforts have had all the sophistication and wit of a Coward." He served in the army from 1941 until 1946. The German libretto is by Gottlieb Stephanie, based on Christoph Friedrich Bretzner's ''Belmont und Constanze, oder Die Entführung aus dem Serail''. The plot concerns the attempt of the hero Belmonte, assisted by his servant Pedrillo, to rescue his beloved Constanze from the seraglio of Pasha Selim. The work premiered on 16 July 1782 at the Vienna Burgtheater, with the composer conducting. Origins The company that first sponsored the opera was the ''Nationalsingspiel'' ("national Singspiel"), a pet project (1778–1783) of the Austrian emperor Joseph II. The Emperor had set up the company to perform works in the German language (as opposed to the Italian opera style widely popular in Vienna). Donald Sydney Smith OBE (27 July 19201 December 1998) was an Australian operatic tenor. His voice had a bright Italianate quality which could match, in size carrying power and tonal allure, the voices of most sopranos and mezzos.
