Thai Community Development Center
The Thai Community Development Center (Thai CDC) is a nonprofit NGO in Los Angeles, California that assists Thai and other immigrants. History Thai CDC was founded by Chanchanit Martorell on April 13, 1994, with the idea that all peoples have a basic right to a decent standard of living and quality of life. Since its establishment, Thai CDC has addressed the needs of Thai and other disadvantaged immigrants faced with substandard housing conditions and lack of access to basic health services, education and employment opportunities. Chanchanit Martorell
Chanchanit Martorell (born in Bangkok, Thailand), is an activist, educator, urban planner, and a community development practitioner. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the Thai Community Development Center (Thai CDC). Early life Born in Thailand and raised in Los Angeles, Martorell studied political science and public law at UCLA where she received her B.A. and her M.A. in Urban Planning with a specialization in Urban Regional Development/Third World Development. She also studied Humanities at Chiang Mai University in Northern Thailand in 1988. Her experiences leading to the founding of Thai CDC included work as a planner, as an aide to Congressman Mel Levine and work with other local and state legislative offices. She also created and taught the first Thai-American Experience course offered as part of UCLA's Asian-American Studies curriculum in 1992. Halifax Apartments
Halifax Apartments, originally known as the Cross Arms Apartments, is a historic apartment building on Yucca Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Designed by Walker and Eisen, the building was completed in 1923. The building was originally owned by Leach Cross, who named it the "Cross Arms Apartments." At the time of its opening, it was considered one of the largest and most beautiful apartment houses in Hollywood. In October 1924, the building sold for $750,000, and the new owner renamed the building the "Halifax Apartments." In its early years, the Halifax was a popular residence for entertainers, including silent film star Ned Sparks, and opera star Ernestine Schumann-Heink. The paper boasts of reaching 125,000 readers , making it one of the oldest, largest and most influential African-American newspapers in the Western United States. Thai Town (Thai language, Thai: ) is a neighborhood in Central Los Angeles, California. It is the only officially recognized ''Thai Town'' in the United States. In 2008, it was designated a "Preserve America" neighborhood. History The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on October 27, 1999, to designate the neighborhood as "Thai Town," the first place in the United States with that name. The designation was proposed by Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, who said the move would bring neighborhood pride, economic development and promotion of tourism to the area. El Monte Thai Garment Slavery Case
On August 2, 1995, 72 Thai nationals were found working in conditions of slavery in a makeshift garment factory consisting of a row of residential duplexes in El Monte, California, just east of Los Angeles. This case is considered the first recognized case of modern-day slavery in the United States since the abolishment of slavery. It would serve as a wake-up call for the world to the global phenomenon of human trafficking and modern-day slavery and would begin the anti-trafficking movement in the United States with the Thai Community Development Center as its pioneer. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a federal agency that was established via the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to administer and enforce civil rights laws against workplace discrimination.
