Halifax Apartments
Halifax Apartments, originally known as the Cross Arms Apartments, is a historic apartment building on Yucca Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Designed by Walker and Eisen, the building was completed in 1923. The building was originally owned by Leach Cross, who named it the "Cross Arms Apartments." At the time of its opening, it was considered one of the largest and most beautiful apartment houses in Hollywood. In October 1924, the building sold for $750,000, and the new owner renamed the building the "Halifax Apartments." In its early years, the Halifax was a popular residence for entertainers, including silent film star Ned Sparks, and opera star Ernestine Schumann-Heink. It was also the site of important gatherings, including a 1937 reception hosted by Joseph Laemmle for Mayor Shaw which was also attended by the chief of police and district attorney. Walker & Eisen (1919−1941) was an Architectural firm, architectural partnership of architects Albert R. Walker and Percy A. Eisen in Los Angeles, California. Ned Sparks
Ned Sparks (born Edward Arthur Sparkman, November 19, 1883 – April 3, 1957) was a Canadian-born character actor of the American stage and screen. He was known for his deadpan expression and comically nasal, monotone delivery. Life and career Sparks was born in Guelph, Ontario, but moved to St. Thomas, Ontario, where he grew up. He left home at 16 and attempted prospecting in the Klondike Gold Rush. After running out of money, he began performing. Billed as a "Singer of Sweet Southern Songs" and costumed in a straw hat, short pants and bare feet, he won a spot as a singer on a traveling musical company's tour. At 19, he returned to Canada and briefly attended a Toronto seminary. He then worked for the railroad and in theater in Toronto. In 1907, he moved to New York City to try his hand in the Broadway theatre, where he appeared in his first show in 1912. Ernestine Schumann-Heink (15 June 186117 November 1936) was a Bohemian-born Austrian-American operatic dramatic contralto of German Bohemian descent. She was noted for the flexibility and wide range of her voice. Early life She was born Ernestine Amalie Pauline Rössler on 15 June 1861 to a German language, German-speaking family at Libeň (german: Lieben), Bohemia, Austrian Empire, which is now part of the city of Prague, Czech Republic. She was baptized Catholic Church, Catholic five days later. Her father, who called his daughter "Tini", was Hans Rössler. Before working as a Shoemaking, shoe maker, he served as an Austrian Empire, Austrian cavalry officer. Ena Dubnoff is an American architect based in Santa Monica, California. She is the principal of Ena Dubnoff Architects. Ena Dubnoff's father, Jacob W. Dubnoff, was a biochemist at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Dubnoff's mother, Belle Dubnoff, was an educator, who established the Dubnoff School for Educational Therapy in 1948 with the mission to provide educational opportunities to children with developmental disabilities. Known as the Dubnoff Center for Child Development and Educational Therapy, it was located in North Hollywood. The site was taken over by Penny Lane in 2013, an establishment dealing with children who were abused by their family members and bullies.
