Tha Myat
Tha Myat ( my, သာမြတ်, ; 29 April 1899 – 24 November 1977) was a linguist, known for his works on writing systems of Burma (Myanmar), notably on the Pyu language. Early life Tha Myat was born on 29 April 1899 to a merchant family of Ngwe Thin ( my-Mymr, ငွေသင်) and Po Mya ( my-Mymr, ဘိုးမြ) in Padigon. He studied at his local monastery until 12 before leaving for Gyobingauk to continue schooling at R.C.M. St. Michael's School. There, during summer holidays, he studied Hindi reading and writing from an Indian man. After completing 7th Standard, he then went on to study at Prome High School in Pyay. He passed the university matriculation examination with honors in English, Burmese and Pali. Then, he studied at Government College. In 1921, he finished intermediate college with honors, and received a scholarship to further study at Pune Agricultural College, then an affiliate college of the University of Bombay. ''A History of the Pyu Alphabet'' ( my, ပျူအက္ခရာသမိုင်း) is a book on the Pyu language first published in 1963 by Tha Myat. Research The author Tha Myat studied Indian and Southeast Asian stone inscriptions before writing the book. It took about ten years for him to understand the Pyu writing and to reveal the denotations of Pyu alphabets. Publications First time The book was first published in 1963. It was published by ''National Publishing Works''. Tha Myat presented his interpretations of the Pyu portions of the Myazedi Inscription, as well as of other Pyu inscriptions. However, because his translations lacked precision, the Burma historian G.H. Luce called them "tentative". Romanization of the Burmese alphabet is representation of the Burmese language or Burmese names in the Latin alphabet. Official transcription systems The MLC romanization system (1980) is promoted inside Myanmar. Inside and outside Myanmar several other systems may also be used. Replicating Burmese sounds in the Latin script is complicated. * MLC Transcription System (MLCTS), of the Myanmar Language Commission is the government recommended transliteration system for rendering Burmese in the Latin alphabet. The Burma Research Society ( my, မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ သုတေသန အသင်း ) was an academic society devoted to historical research of Burma (Myanmar). Its aims were "the investigation and encouragement of Art, Science and Literature in relation to Burma and the neighbouring countries". The society was founded on 29 March 1910 at a meeting held at the Bernard Free Library in Yangon by J S Furnivall, J A Stewart, Gordon H Luce, Pe Maung Tin and Charles Duroiselle. Burma Translation Society
Sarpay Beikman ( my, စာပေဗိမာန်; ) originated as the Burmese Translation Society. Its first President was Prime Minister U Nu, who started a Burmese translation job at Judson College (now University of Yangon). The purpose was to translate world culture, literature, education for the Burmese public. In 1963, the society was absorbed into the Ministry of Information's Printing and Publishing Enterprise as the Sarpay Beikman Literature House, and the mandate was extended to encourage local writers and to print and publish books of all types.
