Texas State Highway Loop 12
Loop 12 is a state highway that runs mostly within the city limits of Dallas, Texas. The western segment of the loop is named after General Walton Walker, who served and died in South Korea. During the 1950s and 1960s, Loop 12 was the outer beltway in the Dallas area, having since been supplanted by Interstate 635 (I-635), which is itself being supplanted by the President George Bush Turnpike (SH 190). Loop 12 is, however, the only state highway in Dallas that forms a complete loop ( Belt Line Road is also a complete loop but is not a state road except for a stretch as part of Farm to Market Road 1382). Route description Starting in the east at I-30, Loop 12 goes north as Buckner Boulevard, following surface streets past White Rock Lake. Dallas Love Field is a city-owned public airport northwest of downtown Dallas, Texas., effective April 10, 2008 It was Dallas' main airport until 1974 when Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) opened. Love Field covers an area of at an elevation of above mean sea level and has two runways. Love Field is the birthplace, corporate headquarters, and a major operating base of Southwest Airlines; as of August 2021, Southwest has a 95% market share at the airport. Trinity River Audubon Center
The Trinity River Audubon Center is a nature center in the Great Trinity Forest, a large urban open space park in Southeast Dallas, Texas. History The center was completed in 2008 on the site of a former illegal landfill called Deepwood. Federal Judge Barefoot Sanders resolved a lawsuit by issuing an order resulting in the creation of a nature center on the site. Prior to becoming an illegal dump, the site was a farm and then a gravel mine. The center was designed by Antoine Predock anBRW Architects It is the first LEED-certified building constructed by the Parks and Recreation Department of Dallas and includes a green roof (planted), rainwater collection system, energy efficient systems, and recycled materials. Interstate 45
Interstate 45 (I-45) is a major Interstate Highway located entirely within the US state of Texas. While most Interstate routes which have numbers ending in "5" are cross-country north–south routes, I-45 is comparatively short, with the entire route located in Texas. Additionally, it has the shortest length of all the interstates that end in a "5." It connects the cities of Dallas and Houston, continuing southeast from Houston to Galveston over the Galveston Causeway to the Gulf of Mexico. I-45 replaced U.S. Highway 75 (US 75) over its entire length, although portions of US 75 remained parallel to I-45 until its elimination south of Downtown Dallas in 1987. Dallas Executive Airport
Dallas Executive Airport , formerly Redbird Airport, is six miles (10 km) southwest of Downtown Dallas, in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The airport is used for general aviation and is a reliever airport for Dallas Love Field. In 2013, the Commemorative Air Force announced that they would build a "National Airbase" at Executive which would include their headquarters and main museum, both of which would be moved from Midland. As of 2016, the Commemorative Air Force established their headquarters at the airport and currently occupies a hangar on the southeast side of the airfield. The Dallas Police Department operates their helicopter(s) from Dallas Executive Airport. Interstate 20 in Texas (I-20) is a major east–west Interstate Highway in the Southern United States, running east from a junction with I-10 east of Kent, Texas, through the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to the border with Louisiana near Waskom, Texas. The original distance of I-20 was from I-10 to the Louisiana border, reduced to the current distance of with the rerouting of I-20 in the 1980s and 1990s. Texas State Highway Spur 408
Spur 408, officially designated as "Patriot Parkway", is a connecting freeway between Loop 12 and Interstate 20, completely within the city of Dallas, Texas. The road is an integral part of the orbital road around Dallas, in conjunction with Interstate 635, and parts of Loop 12, Interstate 35E, and Interstate 20. Route description The freeway passes through a generally undeveloped area of Dallas; there are no businesses located anywhere on the route that can provide services to motorists. It is designated as "Patriot Parkway" since it passes along the eastern side of the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery; however, it is locally referred to as Spur 408. Spur 408 also passes near Dallas Baptist University and The Potters' House, the megachurch pastored by T.D. Jakes. Mountain Creek Lake
Mountain Creek Lake is a reservoir located southwest of Downtown Dallas, Texas, United States, in the Mountain Creek area of the city. It is located south of SH 180, west of Spur 408, north of I-20, and east of FM 1382. The defunct Naval Air Station Dallas (Hensley Field), now an Armed Forces Reserve Center, is located on the northern shore of the lake. Mountain Creek Lake Park is on the lake's southeastern and southwestern edges. The Texas Department of State Health Services in April 1996 issued a ban on keeping or eating fish due to high contamination levels of PCBs and other toxic chemicals. The ban was lifted in 2010, but TDSHS advised against consuming any fish caught in the lake. Texas State Highway 183
State Highway 183 (SH 183) is a state highway in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex in Texas. Its most heavily used section is designated Airport Freeway where it serves the southern entrance of Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport. History SH 183 was designated on November 30, 1932 from SH 15 east of Mesquite via Mesquite to Dallas. This highway was SH 15A before March 19, 1930, and this highway was erroneously omitted from the March 19, 1930 highway log. On September 26, 1939, it extended to Fort Worth, replacing a section of SH 15. On October 30, 1939, SH 183 was extended west from US 81 to US 80. Texas State Highway 114
State Highway 114 (SH 114) is a state highway that runs from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex westward across Texas to the state border with New Mexico, where it becomes New Mexico State Road 114, which eventually ends at Elida, New Mexico at US 70 / NM 330. History The route was originally designated on April 14, 1926 as connector between Dallas and Rhome. In June 1932, SH 114 was extended to Bridgeport.
