State Highway 98 (SH 98) is a north–south state highway in Bowie County, Texas, covering a total distance of . Its northern terminus is at U.S. Highway 82, due west of New Boston. From there, it travels half a mile south, passing under Interstate 30. Two miles further south, it intersects Farm to Market Road 1840, and FM 561 beyond that. It ends at U.S. Highway 67 in the unincorporated community of Simms. The original route originally ended closer to New Boston traveling along current FM 1840, but was redirected north along FM 2552 in 1966. Route description SH 98 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 67 at the community of Simms. The route then travels to the north through ranchlands and forested areas in central Bowie County. New Boston is a city in Bowie County, Texas, Bowie County, Texas, United States. Boston was named for an early storekeeper in the settlement, W.J. Boston. The coming of the railroads led to the location of two more Bostons. A depot was built about four miles north of Boston and was named New Boston. The original Boston then became Old Boston. The courthouse was moved to Texarkana in the early 1880s but a later election carried to move the courthouse back to the geographic center of the county. This location was between the Bostons. The Post Office Department named this location Boston, so Bowie County has claim to three Bostons: New Boston, Boston, and Old Boston. The population was 4,550 at the 2010 census, and 4,612 in 2020. Barry B. Telford (October 24, 1946 – June 1, 2024) was an American politician who served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1987 to 2005. He was the Bowie County Democratic Chair from 1980 to 1986. Life Telford was born on October 24, 1946, in New Boston, Texas. He attended Texarkana Junior College and graduated from North Texas State University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. Telford died on June 1, 2024 at the age of 77. Simms is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Bowie County, Texas, Bowie County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 240 in 2000. It is part of the Texarkana metropolitan area. History Simms was named for G.W. Simms, who helped establish a post office in the community in 1890. Two years later, the community developed a gristmill, a gin, and a store alongside a population of 50.
