Texas State Highway 276
State Highway 276 (SH 276) is a Texas state highway that runs from Rockwall east to Emory. This route was designated on July 25, 1960, between Rockwall and Quinlan, replacing FM 1143 and part of FM 35. SH 276 was extended to its current terminus on October 25, 1990, replacing most of FM 35. History SH 276 was designated on September 7, 1938, as a route between US 285 southeast of Arno and Mentone. On April 16, 1946, another section from SH 115 to what was then SH 82 (now SH 18) in Kermit was added. On August 12, 1946, that section was transferred to SH 302. On December 1, 1953, SH 276 was transferred to SH 302. In early 2021, construction began near Quinlan to eliminate the SH 276/ SH 34 concurrency by rerouting SH 276 along the south side of Quinlan from its intersection with SH 34 and reconnecting with the existing SH 276 west of the city. Quinlan, Texas
Quinlan is a rural city in the southern part of Hunt County, Texas, United States, within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,394. It is west of Lake Tawakoni. History The city of Quinlan began about 1892 as a stop on the Texas Midland Railroad, which was owned by famed bond investor Hetty Green, called by the contemporary press "The Witch of Wall Street". The railroad was operated by her son, Edward H.R. Green. Lake Tawakoni ( ) is a reservoir located in Northeast Texas, about east of Dallas. It lies within three Texas counties, Hunt, Rains, and Van Zandt. It is used for water supply and recreation. It is under the Sabine River Authority of Texas and the original headwaters of the Sabine are converged under the lake surface. Etymology The lake was named for the Tawakoni Native American peoples, who were a larger part of the Caddo Nation. The Caddos inhabited a large swath of North and East Texas, including where the lake is located. History The reservoir was constructed in 1960 with the Iron Bridge Dam. The area was chosen due to its location to the growing Dallas area and the growth east of the city and its respective suburbs. West Tawakoni ( ) is a city in Hunt County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2020 census. West Tawakoni is located on the west side of Lake Tawakoni, while its twin city East Tawakoni is located on the east side of the lake in Rains County. Geography West Tawakoni is located in southeastern Hunt County at (32.902544, –96.024452). It is bordered on three sides by Lake Tawakoni, a reservoir on the Sabine River. To the north is the lake's Caddo Inlet, to the south are Waco Bay and Kitsee Inlet, and to the east is the main body of the lake. Emory is a city in Rains County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,239 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rains County, Texas, Rains County. Previously known as Springville, the city and county are named after Emory Rains who was a legislator from the area.
