Testament Of Youth
''Testament of Youth'' is the first instalment, covering 1900–1925, in the memoir of Vera Brittain (1893–1970). It was published in 1933. Brittain's memoir continues with ''Testament of Experience'', published in 1957, and encompassing the years 1925–1950. Between these two books comes ''Testament of Friendship'' (published in 1940), which is essentially a memoir of Brittain's close colleague and friend Winifred Holtby. A final segment of memoir, to be called ''Testament of Faith'' or ''Testament of Time'', was planned by Brittain but remained unfinished at her death. ''Testament of Youth'' has been acclaimed as a classic for its description of the impact of World War I on the lives of women and the middle-class civilian population of the United Kingdom. Vera Brittain
Vera Mary Brittain (29 December 1893 – 29 March 1970) was an English Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse, writer, feminist, socialist and pacifist. Her best-selling 1933 memoir ''Testament of Youth'' recounted her experiences during the First World War and the beginning of her journey towards pacifism. Life and work Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Brittain was the daughter of a well-to-do paper manufacturer, (Thomas) Arthur Brittain (1864–1935) and his wife, Edith Mary (Bervon) Brittain (1868–1948). Her father was a director of family-owned paper mills in Hanley and Cheddleton. Her mother was born in Aberystwyth, Wales, the daughter of an impoverished musician, John Inglis Bervon. ''Time and Tide'' was a British weekly (and later monthly) political and literary review magazine founded by Margaret, Lady Rhondda, in 1920. It started out as a supporter of left wing and feminist causes and the mouthpiece of the feminist Six Point Group. It later moved to the right along with the views of its owner. It always supported and published literary talent. The first editor was Helen Archdale. Lady Rhondda took over herself as editor in 1926 and remained so for the rest of her life. Armistice
An armistice is a formal agreement of warring parties to stop fighting. It is not necessarily the end of a war, as it may constitute only a cessation of hostilities while an attempt is made to negotiate a lasting peace. It is derived from the Latin ''arma'', meaning "arms" (as in weapons) and ''-stitium'', meaning "a stopping". The United Nations Security Council often imposes, or tries to impose, cease-fire resolutions on parties in modern conflicts. Armistices are always negotiated between the parties themselves and are thus generally seen as more binding than non-mandatory UN cease-fire resolutions in modern international law. Ann Jane Wenham Figgins (26 November 1927 – 15 November 2018), known professionally as Jane Wenham, was an English film and television actress born in Southampton, Hampshire. Wenham made her film debut in the adaptation of J. B. Priestley's ''An Inspector Calls'' (1954). ''Testament of Youth'' is a 1979 BBC television drama based on the World War I, First World War memoir of the Testament of Youth, same name written by Vera Brittain. It was transmitted on BBC Two, BBC2. The series stars Cheryl Campbell as Vera Brittain, an independent young woman from Buxton, Derbyshire, who abandons her studies at Somerville College, Oxford, Somerville College, University of Oxford, Oxford University to become a volunteer nurse. Elaine Morgan OBE, FRSL (7 November 1920 – 12 July 2013), was a Welsh writer for television and the author of several books on evolutionary anthropology.
