Main options include: #Maintain the current ROC/PRC (Taiwan/China) status quo. #Taiwan as a ''de facto'' separate self-governing entity. #Become part of China as a special administrative region of the PRC under the one country, two systems framework (like Hong Kong and Macau). #Formally abolish the ROC and establish a ''de jure'' independent Taiwanese state. # Unify with mainland China under the Government of the ROC. #Unify with mainland China under the Government of the PRC. This controversy also concerns whether the current ''status quo'' of existence and legal status as a sovereign state of both the ROC and the PRC is legitimate as a matter of international law.
