Terry Cavanagh (developer)
Terry Cavanagh ( ; born 1984) is an Irish video game designer based in London, England. After studying mathematics at Trinity College in Dublin, Cavanagh worked briefly as a market risk analyst before focusing on game development full-time. Many of his titles share a primitive, minimalist aesthetic. He has created over two dozen games, most notably ''VVVVVV'', ''Super Hexagon, and Dicey Dungeons''. He is credited as a programmer for '' Alphaland'', a platform game by Jonas Kyratzes. Cavanagh has stated that he prefers the personal nature of independent game development, its smaller scale enabling the personality of the creator to shine through in the final product. Influences Cavanagh cites the 1997 Japanese RPG '' Final Fantasy VII'' as his favorite game, crediting it as his inspiration for becoming a video game developer. Tydavnet, officially Tedavnet (), is a village in northern County Monaghan, Ireland, and also the name of the townland and civil parish in which the village sits. Both the Church of Ireland and Catholic church have Tydavnet named as a parish and in both cases, the geographical area is almost identical. The village is located on the R186 regional road. History Bronze Age gold Evidence of ancient settlement in the area includes the Atlantic Bronze Age Tydavnet gold discs. Dating from circa 2100 BC, these discs were discovered in the roots of an old tree. Raised lines, rows of dots and zig-zags produce a central cross surrounded by concentric patterns, were used to decorate the discs. Jonas Kyratzes
Jonas Kyratzes is a German-Greek video game designer and author of video game industry related articles. Career Kyratzes' games are known for breaking with convention and being heavily story-driven. Several of his games are thematically interconnected, often by the recurring figure of Urizen (first mentioned in ''The Great Machine'') and other themes related to or inspired by the work of William Blake. With his wife, he created The Lands of Dream, a setting for many games, a book, and stories (see Stories below) he and his wife created. He also has an interest in film, and in January 2009 he wrote and directed a short documentary about the 2008 Greek riots called ''The Greek Riots: Some Basic Facts''. ''Don't Look Back'' is a platform game playable through Adobe Flash and designed by Terry Cavanagh. The game is a modern interpretation of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. The game is a combination of two ideas: Cavanagh wished to create a "silly shooter" where the player's actions were "redeemed" after being shown from a different perspective, and he also wished to create a game where the gameplay acted as a metaphor for the player's actions. Critics praised the game's addictiveness and presentation, but had different opinions over its high difficulty level. Gameplay The game is an interpretation of the Orpheus and Eurydice legend with stylized graphics resembling those produced by the Atari 2600 game console.
