Terrenceville
Terrenceville is a small town located on the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada, south west of Swift Current. History Terrenceville is located on the island of Newfoundland, approximately north of Marystown on Route 211. It was known as Head of Fortune Bay until 1905, when it was renamed in honor of former Newfoundland governor Terence O'Brien. The town was serviced by the C.N. coastal boats until early 1995. It was a main port for many isolated communities on the south coast that needed to get to places such as Marystown, Clarenville, and St. John's. The population was 300 in 1944, 424 in 1951 and 521 in 1956. Like many other towns in rural NL, Terrenceville, has seen its population decline due to many families having to leave for full-time employment, as well as an aging population which requires medical facilities. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. The first long-distance call from Newfoundland to Canada was made on January 10, 1939, by using a shortwave radio link operated by the Canadian Marconi Company in Montréal. Terence O'Brien (colonial Administrator)
Major General Sir John Terence Nicholls O'Brien (23 April 1830 – 25 February 1903) was a surveyor, engineer and colonial governor. Born in Manchester, England, O'Brien studied at Elizabeth College, Guernsey, and then attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. O'Brien, a British Army officer, received a medal of honour for his service in the Indian Mutiny War. He was appointed acting Governor of British Ceylon in 1863 and held the office for two years, succeeding Charles Justin MacCarthy. In 1881, he was appointed governor of Heligoland, knighted in 1888 and became governor of Newfoundland in 1889. O'Brien as governor of Newfoundland helped precipitate the 1894 bank crash by his many dispatches to London noting that Newfoundland politicians under Premier William Whiteway's Liberal Government were uniquely corrupt and incompetent. Come Home Year is a Canadian civic event for many towns that encourages a return to home town. Due to significant economic migration away from many of the small rural towns these events draw many generations to celebrate.
