Tennyson, Victoria
Tennyson is a locality in north central Victoria, Australia. The locality is in the Shire of Campaspe, north west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Tennyson had a population of 48. History Tennyson was settled in the early 1870s and was originally named Pannoomilloo West. In 1875 a school opened called Pannoo Bamawm. In 1909 the Waranga Western Channel was extended, running through Pannoo Bamawm. In 1910 a Hall and Post office opened and the localities name was changed to Tennyson. The electoral district of Murray Plains is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in the redistribution of electoral boundaries in 2013, and came into effect at the 2014 state election. The district was created due to the abolition of the districts of Swan Hill and Rodney. It is centred on the Murray River cities of Swan Hill and Echuca, including the towns of Kerang, Lake Boga, Cohuna and Rochester. Rochester is a small town in rural Victoria, Australia. It is located north of Melbourne with a mixture of rural and semi-rural communities on the northern Campaspe River, between Bendigo and the Murray River port of Echuca. At the , Rochester had a population of 3,154. History The area around the Campaspe River was known as Yalooka, which for thousands of years was home to the Pinpandoor, the local tribe of Aboriginal Australians. Rochester (via ''Rowechester'') was named after Dr John Pearson Rowe, who had a hotel here before the township was gazetted in 1855. Lockington is a town in northern Victoria, Australia in the Shire of Campaspe local government area, 198 kilometres north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Lockington had a population of 808. History For over 26,000 years, the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Yorta Yorta people had made the area around Lockington their home. Prior to early settlement, these groups were the primary custodians of the land, maintaining it whilst also practising their culture upon it. The first trace of European settlement can be traced back to the 1840s when it was owned by squatters under lease-hold tenure. At the time the whole area surrounding the present location of Lockington, an area made up of approximately 42,000 hectares, was known as Pine Grove and was owned by John Hunter Patterson. The Shire of Campaspe is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the northern part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 37,592. It includes the towns of Girgarre, Echuca, Kyabram, Rochester, Tongala and Rushworth. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the City of Echuca, Shire of Deakin, Shire of Rochester, Shire of Waranga, Town of Kyabram and part of the Shire of Rodney.
