USS ''Enterprise'' (NCC-1701-D), or ''Enterprise''-D, is a starship in the ''Star Trek'' media franchise. Under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, it is the main setting of '' Star Trek: The Next Generation'' (1987–1994) and the film ''Star Trek Generations'' (1994). It has also been depicted in various spinoffs, films, books, and licensed products. ''The Next Generation'' occurs in the 24th century, 78 years after the adventures of Captain James T. Starship
A starship, starcraft, or interstellar spacecraft is a theoretical spacecraft designed for interstellar travel, traveling between planetary systems. The term is mostly found in science fiction. Reference to a "star-ship" appears as early as 1882 in ''Oahspe: A New Bible''. While NASA's Voyager program, ''Voyager'' and Pioneer program, ''Pioneer'' probes have traveled into local interstellar space, the purpose of these uncrewed craft was specifically interplanetary, and they are not predicted to reach another star system (although ''Voyager 1'' will travel to within 1.7 light years of Gliese 445 in approximately 40,000 years). Rick Sternbach
Richard Michael Sternbach (born 1951 in Bridgeport, Connecticut) is an illustrator who is best known for his space illustrations and his work on the ''Star Trek'' television series. Early years Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1969 Sternbach enrolled at the University of Connecticut with an art major, but after a couple of years switched to marine biology. After leaving University, he became an illustrator for books and magazines, with his first cover illustration published on the October 1973 issue of ''Analog'' magazine. During 1974 to 1976 he produced several original works of art for the Gengras Planetarium, part of the Children's Museum of West Hartford, in Connecticut. The works included airbrush paintings of the Earth as a primeval planet. It is unknown if these works are still in possession of CMWH, the original owner and client of Sternbach. USS ''Enterprise'' NCC-1701-A (or ''Enterprise''-A, to distinguish it from other vessels with the same name) is a fictional starship in three '' Star Trek'' films. It made its debut in the final scene of the 1986 film '' Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home''. Origin and design Visual effects supervisor Ken Ralston had hoped the ''Enterprise'''s destruction in ''The Search for Spock'' would open the door to designing a new model for future films. However, producers for '' Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home'' (1986) decided to have the crew return to a duplicate of their previous ship. Leonard McCoy
Dr. Leonard H. McCoy, known as "Bones", is a character in the American science-fiction franchise ''Star Trek''. McCoy was played by actor DeForest Kelley in the original ''Star Trek'' series from 1966 to 1969, and he also appears in the animated ''Star Trek'' series, six ''Star Trek'' films, the pilot episode of '' Star Trek: The Next Generation'', and in numerous books, comics, and video games. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is the third episode of the first season of the American science fiction television series, ''Star Trek''. Written by Samuel A. Peeples and directed by James Goldstone, it first aired on September 22, 1966. In the episode, after the ''Enterprise'' attempts to cross the energy barrier at the edge of the galaxy, two crew members develop powerful ESP abilities which threaten the safety of the crew. The episode was the second pilot, produced in 1965 after the first pilot, " The Cage", was rejected by NBC. Reportedly, Lucille Ball, who owned Desilu Productions (where the pilot was produced), persuaded NBC management to consider a second pilot, thereby exercising a special option agreement it had with Desilu, because she liked Gene Roddenberry and believed in the project. Matt Jefferies
Walter Matthew Jefferies (August 12, 1921 – July 21, 2003) was an American aviation and mechanical artist, set designer, and writer. He is best known for his work on the original ''Star Trek'' television series, where he designed many of the sets and props, including the original Starship ''Enterprise'', and the bridge and sick bay. Early life Jefferies was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. His father was chief engineer at a power plant in Virginia. He had a younger brother named John who worked with him as his chief draftsman. He served in Europe in World War II, was inside of B-17, B-24, B-25 bombers and had four years as a flight test engineer. He had three brothers, John, Richard and Philip, the latter two of whom would become production designers.
