Tecumsay Roberts
Tecumsay Roberts ( 19511990) was a Liberian singer and dancer.His name is also sometimes spelled as "Tecumseh". Early life Tecumsay Roberts was born around 1951. Roberts had six siblings, including fellow musician Sandy Roberts. Tecumsay got his start singing in high school in Monrovia. Career In Roberts' early career, he fronted a band named Liberian Dream, and circulated performances between Monrovia, Freetown, and Abidjan. The first album he recorded was entitled ''Gettin' It On''. Roberts also recorded the theme song for the 1979 Organisation of African Unity conference in Monrovia. Roberts had also performed in London with another band he led named Boombaya. Roberts' original style was a fusion of African and Caribbean music, dubbed "Afrolypso". This style was prominent in his single, ''Comin' Home''. Roberts also performed pop music. Calypso Music
Calypso is a style of Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to the mid-19th century and spread to the rest of the Caribbean Antilles and Venezuela by the mid-20th century. Its rhythms can be traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of French planters and their slaves from the French Antilles in the 18th century. It is characterized by highly rhythmic and harmonic vocals, and was historically most often sung in a French creole and led by a griot. As calypso developed, the role of the griot became known as a ''chantuelle'' and eventually, ''calypsonian''. As English replaced "patois" (Antillean creole) as the dominant language, calypso migrated into English, and in so doing it attracted more attention from the government. Truth And Reconciliation Commission (Liberia)
The Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is a Parliament-enacted organization created in May 2005 under the Transitional Government. The Commission worked throughout the first mandate of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf after her election as President of Liberia in November 2005. The Liberian TRC came to a conclusion in 2010, filing a final report and recommending relevant actions by national authorities to ensure responsibility and reparations. The Liberian TRC has garnered much criticism for its inability to address Charles Taylor and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The Special Court for Sierra Leone indicted Charles Taylor, the leader of the rebel group the National Patriotic Front of Liberia that many of the crimes against humanity are attributed. This indictment prevented the Liberian TRC from hearing any testimony from Taylor. Saint Paul River
The Saint Paul River is a river of western Africa. Its headwaters are in southeastern Guinea. Its upper portion in Guinea is known as the Diani River or Niandi River, and forms part of the boundary between Guinea and Liberia. It is known locally as the Du by the Gola people in Liberia. The river then enters Liberia about north of Gbarnga and crosses Liberia in a southwesterly direction.
