Teaching Excellence Framework
The Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) is a controversial government assessment of the quality of undergraduate teaching in universities and other higher education providers in England, which may be used from 2020 to determine whether state-funded providers are permitted to raise tuition fees. Higher education providers from elsewhere in the United Kingdom are allowed to opt-in, but the rating has no impact on their funding. The TEF rates universities as ''Gold'', ''Silver'' or ''Bronze'', in order of quality of teaching. The first results were published in June 2017. This was considered a "trial year" (even though the non-provisional ratings awarded are valid for 3 years) and is to be followed by a "lessons learned exercise" that will feed into the 2018 TEF and longer-term plans for subject-level ratings. The Independent
''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition. The newspaper was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Irish Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to the Russian oligarch and former KGB Officer Alexander Lebedev in 2010. Michael Arthur (physician)
Sir Michael James Paul Arthur FMedSci (born 3 August 1954) is a British academic who was the tenth provost and president of University College London between 2013 and January 2021. Arthur had previously been chairman of the Russell Group of UK universities and the vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds between September 2004 and 2013. Early life Arthur was born in Purley, London, England. He attended Burnt Mill School in Harlow, Essex, at a similar time to Bill Rammell. His father was a cabinet maker and his mother was a student liaison officer at an agricultural college. He went to the University of Southampton, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine in 1977 and became a Doctor of Medicine in 1986. Simone Buitendijk
Simone Elisabeth Buitendijk is a Dutch academic and the vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds. Her research considers women's health and innovations in education. Early life and education Buitendijk was born in The Hague. She studied medicine at Utrecht University. She earned a Master of public health at Yale School of Medicine in 1990 where she evaluated the prevalence of medication in early pregnancy and how it related to maternal characteristics. She found that women who use more over-the-counter and prescription drugs are more likely to be white, smoke more than 30 cigarettes a day and smoke marijuana. She joined the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research where she worked as a Senior Researcher in perinatal epidemiology. Nick Hillman
Nicholas Piers Huxley Hillman (known as Nick Hillman, born Banbury, Oxfordshire, 21 April 1972) is an English higher education policy adviser, previously a school history teacher and special adviser for the Conservatives. He has been the director of the Higher Education Policy Institute since 2014. Career Hillman studied as an undergraduate at the University of Manchester. He taught English at the University of Bucharest in Romania in 1992, then gained a PGCE in history at Christ's College, Cambridge before teaching history at St Paul's School, London from 1995–1998.
