Tazlina Lake
Tazlina Lake is a body of water, long, in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is at the head of the Tazlina River, north of the 1952 terminus of Tazlina Glacier and north of Valdez, in the Copper River basin. It is a remnant of ancient Lake Atna. History The Russian Shturman Serebrenikov appears to have been the first "white man" to reach this lake; according to his notes he was here on May 30, 1848. He recorded the name as "Plavezhnoye Ozero," or "Plavezhni Lake." He reported two Indian families living on the lake (Allen, 1887, p. 21.). Etymology Local name taken from the stream that drains the lake, reported in 1898 by F. C. Schrader, USGS. Tazlina River
The Tazlina River is a tributary of the Copper River in the U.S. state of Alaska. Draining Tazlina Lake, it flows generally east to meet the larger river southeast of Glennallen. Course Tazlina Lake lies at the base of Tazlina Glacier in the Chugach Mountains north of Valdez. From the lake, the river meanders toward Glennallen, receiving Durham Creek and then Nickel Creek from the right and Moose Creek from the left. The east–west trending Glenn Highway runs to the left (north) of the river and approximately parallel to it for most of its course. Downstream of Glenallen, the Tazlina River passes under the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and the north–south trending Richardson Highway before entering the Copper River. Tazlina Glacier
Tazlina Glacier is a long glacier in the U.S. state of Alaska. It begins 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of Mount Cashman and flows north to its terminus one mile (1.6 km) south of Tazlina Lake and 43 miles (69 km) north of Valdez. Tazlina Glacier is the largest northward flowing glacier in the Chugach Mountains. The terminus of the glacier is retreating and thinning. Tazlina is the largest north-flowing glacier in the Chugach Mountains. The glacier is around the Valdez area and is also a popular attraction for tourists. Valdez, Alaska
Valdez ( ; Alutiiq: ) is a city in the Chugach Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. According to the 2020 US Census, the population of the city is 3,985, up from 3,976 in 2010. It is the third most populated city in Alaska's Unorganized Borough. The city was named in 1790 after the Spanish Navy Minister Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán. A former Gold Rush town, it is located at the head of Port Valdez on the eastern side of Prince William Sound. The port did not flourish until after the road link to Fairbanks was constructed in 1899. It suffered catastrophic damage during the 1964 Alaska earthquake, and is located near the site of the disastrous 1989 Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill. Copper River (Alaska)
The Copper River or Ahtna River (), Ahtna Athabascan ‘Atna’tuu (), "river of the Ahtnas", Tlingit Eeḵhéeni (), "river of copper", is a 290-mile (470 km) river in south-central Alaska in the United States. It drains a large region of the Wrangell Mountains and Chugach Mountains into the Gulf of Alaska. Lake Atna
Lake Atna (; also known as Lake Ahtna) was a prehistoric proglacial lake that initially formed approximately 58 ka (thousand years ago) in the Copper River Basin, an area roughly centered around northeast of modern-day Anchorage, Alaska. The lake formed, and dispersed, during the Wisconsin glaciation. The lake existed in several forms, with several prominent shorelines observable in modern geology. At its greatest extent, the lake surface area was approximately half the size of modern-day Lake Ontario, and possibly much larger. The basin of the lake lay within an area bordered by the Alaska Range to the north, the Wrangell Mountains to the east, the Chugach Mountains to the south, and the Talkeetna Mountains to the west.
