Taranis (gastropod)
''Taranis '' is a genus of sea snails, marine (ocean), marine gastropod mollusks in the family (biology), family Raphitomidae. This genus was formerly placed in subfamily Borsoniinae, family Turridae in Vaught (1989). The name Taranis is the Latinised name of the Gallic thunder god Taran. It is therefore a masculine name. Description The species in this genus are characterized by the absence of a radula together with the loss or reduction of a number of other features of foregut anatomy (as described by Kantor & Sysoev (1989) ).KANTOR, Y. I. & SYSOEV, A. V. 1989. The morphology of toxoglossan gastropods lacking a radula, with a description of a new species and genus of Turridae. J. Moll. Stud. 55 (4): 537-549. Species Species within the genus ''Taranis '' include: * ''Taranis adenensis'' Morassi & Bonfitto, 2013 * † ''Taranis aliena'' (Marwick, 1965) * ''Taranis allo'' (Lamy, 1934) * ''Taranis benthicola'' (Dell, 1956) * ''Taranis borealis'' Bouchet & Warén, 1980 * † ''Ta ...

Genus
Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. In the hierarchy of biological classification, genus comes above species and below family (taxonomy), family. In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus. :E.g. ''Panthera leo'' (lion) and ''Panthera onca'' (jaguar) are two species within the genus ''Panthera''. ''Panthera'' is a genus within the family Felidae. The composition of a genus is determined by taxonomy (biology), taxonomists. The standards for genus classification are not strictly codified, so different authorities often produce different classifications for genera. There are some general practices used, however, including the idea that a newly defined genus should fulfill these three criteria to be descriptively useful: # monophyly – all descendants ...

Taranis Panope
''Taranis panope'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Raphitomidae. Description The length of the shell attains 4.5 mm, its diameter 2.3 mm. (Original description) The small shell contains about six whorls including the blunt (defective) protoconch. They are white with a pale olivaceous periostracum, short and stumpy. The earlier whorls show two strong peripheral keels and a thread upon which the suture is laid. The body whorl shows a cord at the suture and on the other side of the anal fasciole about five elevated keels with subequal interspaces, more adjacent on the base with about as many more smaller and closer threads on the anterior region. The suture is appressed and obscure. The anal fasciole is concave, not spirally striated The axial sculpture consists of rather close sharp striae which cut the spirals. The aperture is narrow. The anal sulcus is deep and rounded. The outer lip is greatly produced, thin and smooth within. The inner lip s ...

It contains six whorls with two polished whorls in the protoconch. The spire-whorls show a prominent spiral keel, crossed by rather oblique and rather distant spiral threads, forming an obtuse angle on the keel. The suture is margined. The body whorl contains 8 or 9 spiral ribs, the first and third larger than the others. The others after the sixth come very close together on the siphonal canal. Taranis Moerchii
''Taranis moerchii'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Raphitomidae. Description The length of the shell varies between 2 mm and 4 mm. The two specimens from station 2077, in 1255 fathoms, are somewhat stouter than those previously obtained, and have the principal carina, forming the shoulder, larger and more prominent than usual, but it bears only very minute tubercles, corresponding to the very fine and close riblets which cross the wide and abruptly sloping subsutural band obliquely, and are about twice as numerous and much finer than in the ordinary variety. On the body whorl there are about six prominent, distant, revolving cinguli below the shoulder, besides some faint ones on the base of the siphonal canal. The space between the uppermost of these and the shoulder-carina is greater than usual. The lines of growth are much finer than in the ordinary form and do not take the appearance of riblets on the body whorl, nor do they re ...

The spire-whorls are convex medially sharply angulate with a cord, base contracted, and forming a moderately long siphonal canal, which is slightly curved to the left. The sutures are distinct and finely canaliculate. The aperture is obliquely oval. The outer lip is thin, simple, ridged outside by the spirals, with an obtuse shallow, wide triangular sinus at the angulation. Sculpture : above the angle are three spirals in each whorl, and one below it. In the body whorl are eighteen, subdistant just below the angle, crowded towards the siphonal canal.
