Tanglewood Institute
The Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is a summer music training program for students age 10 to 20 in Lenox, Massachusetts, under the auspices of the Boston University College of Fine Arts. History BUTI was envisioned in 1965 when Erich Leinsdorf, then music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), invited Edward Stein, dean of the Boston University College of Fine Arts, to create a summer training program for young musicians as an extension to the BSO’s Tanglewood Music Center (TMC). BUTI opened for its inaugural season the following June. Groton Place, the central building on campus, was home to multiple organizations prior to BUTI’s residency. Built in 1905 as a summer home for Grenville Lindall Winthrop, it was purchased in 1943 to serve as the home for the Windsor Mountain School. Nico Muhly
Nico Asher Muhly (; born August 26, 1981) is an American contemporary classical music composer and arranger who has worked and recorded with both classical and pop musicians. A prolific composer, he has composed for many notable symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles and has had two operas commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. Missy Mazzoli
Missy Mazzoli (born October 27, 1980) is an American composer and pianist who is a member of the composition faculty at the Mannes College of Music. She has received critical acclaim for her chamber, orchestral and operatic work. In 2018 she became one of the first two women to receive a commission from the Metropolitan Opera House. She is the founder and keyboardist for Victoire, an electro-acoustic band dedicated to performing her music. From 2012-2015 she was composer-in-residence at Opera Philadelphia, in collaboration with Gotham Chamber Opera and Music-Theater Group. Her music is published by G. Schirmer. Benjamin Levy (Double Bassist)
Benjamin Levy (born 1980) is an American classical musician who plays bouble bass. Early life and education Levy was born in Cooperstown, New York, in 1980 and grew up in Pennsylvania and Colorado. He attended Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado, and spent two summers at the Aspen Music Festival. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in double bass performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2002. Career Levy has appeared in performance with soprano Dawn Upshaw, the Borromeo String Quartet, and the Hawthorne String Quartet. The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony (PACS) is a classical symphony orchestra based in New York City. The orchestra has performed at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall and won The American Prize Competition in Orchestral Performance three times. Mason Wesley Bates (born January 23, 1977) is a Grammy award-winning American composer of symphonic music and DJ of electronic dance music. Kenneth Amis
Kenneth Amis (born 1970) is a Bermudian tuba player best known for his association with the Empire Brass. He is also the assistant conductor of the MIT Wind Ensemble, a group he has been involved with since its creation in 1999. In addition, as of 2005, Amis is an Affiliated Artist of MIT. He was born and raised in Bermuda. He began studying at Boston University at age 16. After that, he earned a master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. Amis held the International Brass Chair at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He teaches at Lynn University. Amis is the first known person to transcribe Bach's Art of Fugue for wind ensemble (all of the fugues and canons). He currently resides in Norwood, Massachusetts.
