Tamworth, patented 1728, is an historical hamlet in Cumberland County, Virginia, United States, centered along Tamworth Road. In addition to farming, a gristmill and dam on Muddy Creek comprised the principal economic activity. In addition to the mill there are several other structures of historical interest dating from the 18th and 19th centuries: the miller's residence; a farmhouse; barns; assorted out buildings; a post office; and Tamworth Cottage. All of the buildings are privately owned and are shown by appointment only. History The gristmill is known alternatively as Muddy Creek Mills or later as Moon's Mill. The Mill was established in 1753 by Nicholas Davies and enlarged by Richard James in 1775. Operations at the mill ceased in the mid 1950s. Tamworth is a small community in Stone Mills township in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Canada. Tamworth is located due north of Napanee, and northeast of Belleville, near Beaver Lake. Beaver Lake flows into the Salmon River which runs through Tamworth and this flowing water was the source of much of the commerce of Tamworth's former mills. History Originally settled in 1826, Calvin Wheeler built several mills here in the 1840s and it was originally known as Wheeler's Mills. The Tamworth, also known as Sandy Back and Tam, is a breed of domestic pig originating in its namesake Tamworth, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. It is among the oldest of pig breeds, but as with many older breeds of livestock, it is not well suited to modern production methods and is listed as "threatened" in the United States and "vulnerable" in the UK by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, as fewer than 300 registered breeding females remain. Tamworth Two
The Tamworth Two were a pair of pigs that escaped while being unloaded from a lorry at an abattoir in the English town of Malmesbury, Wiltshire in January 1998. The pigs (later named Butch and Sundance after ''Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'') were on the run for more than a week, and the search for them caused a huge media sensation, as well as immense public interest, both in Britain and abroad. Events Butch (a sow) and Sundance (a boar) were sister and brother Tamworth pigs. Both were five months old when their owner took them by lorry to V & G Newman's Abattoir in Malmesbury on 8 January 1998. Just after they were unloaded from the truck, the two pigs escaped by squeezing through a fence and swimming across the River Avon, escaping into nearby gardens. The two pigs spent most of their week of freedom in a dense thicket near Tetbury Hill.
