Tamdhu
Tamdhu distillery is a single malt Scotch Speyside whisky distillery, located in the village of Knockando in Banffshire, Scotland. Tamdhu comes from Gaelic for "little dark hill". The distillery was founded in 1896 by a group of assemblers, wishing to engage in the production of their own whisky. The first malt whisky was distilled and casked in 1897. It quickly passed on into the hands of Highland Distillers. The history of the distillery was fairly quiet, without changing owners, but still marked by a long dormancy between 1927 and 1947. Its production capacity was tripled between 1972 and 1975. The distillery has now 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills. Its annual production of pure alcohol is 4 million gallons. Unlike its neighbours, the Tamdhu distillery has no roof-shaped pagoda above its malt furnaces. This is one of the last distilleries to malt all of its barley on the spot by a mechanical saladin. Knockando, Moray
Knockando ( gd, Cnoc Cheannachd) is a village in Moray, Scotland. It is a farming centre and the location of both the Knockando distillery and the Tamdhu distillery. It is also the location of Knockando Woolmill, which has been producing textiles since 1784 and which achieved national fame as a finalist in the second series of the BBC's '' Restoration'' television series in 2004. Speyside Single Malts
Speyside single malts are single malt Scotch whiskies, distilled in Strathspey, the area around the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, in northeastern Scotland. The two best-selling single malt whiskies in the world, The Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, come from Speyside. Strathspey has the greatest number of distilleries of any of the whisky-producing areas of Scotland. Dufftown alone has six working distilleries with an annual capacity of 40.4 million litres of spirit. Saladin Box
A Saladin box is an instrument used for malting barley. It consists of a large rectangular container about 50 meters in length, and a set of vertical screws attached to a crossbar. The crossbar moves horizontally across the length of the container while the motion of the screws raises the barley from the bottom to the top. Combined with mechanical air flow across the barley for cooling, this allows for beds of barley between and deep to be turned over two or three times a day. The screws are moved and turned by a system of pulleys and belts. The Saladin box was invented by French engineer Charles Saladin in the late 1800s to overcome the problem where the roots of the malting barley would become entangled if not regularly turned by hand, forming large mats unusable for further processing, as encountered in the earlier system that used artificial air flow to cool the barley in deeper beds designed by Galland. Cutty Sark (whisky)
Cutty Sark is a brand of blended Scotch whisky produced by La Martiniquaise in Scotland. The whisky was created on 23 March 1923 as a product of Berry Bros. & Rudd, with the home of the blend considered to be at The Glenrothes distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland. The name comes from the River Clyde-built clipper ship ''Cutty Sark'', whose name came from the Scots term " cutty-sark", the short shirt kirtprominently mentioned in the famous poem by Robert Burns, " Tam o' Shanter". The drawing of the clipper ship ''Cutty Sark'' on the label of the whisky bottles is a work of the Swedish artist Carl Georg August Wallin.
