Taj Mohammed (footballer)
Taj Mohammed (born 1924, date of death unknown) was an Indian footballer who played for then Calcutta Football League side East Bengal. He competed in the men's tournament at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Playing career Mohammed began his club football career in 1948 at Calcutta Football League club East Bengal. He along with Muhammad Umer, appeared with Karachi-based National Football Championship club Friends Union in 1953–54, and also captained the team. After representing India at international level, he migrated to Pakistan and went on to play for the Pakistan national football team at the Quadrangular Tournament in 1953 in Rangoon. They finished as runners-up in that tournament, as India won title. He was also a member of Pakistan team that toured to Iran and Iraq in the 1950s. ''The Indian Express'' is an English-language Indian daily newspaper founded in 1932. It is published in Mumbai by the Indian Express Group. In 1999, eight years after the group's founder Ramnath Goenka's death in 1991, the group was split between the family members. Rovers Cup
The Rovers Cup was an annual football tournament held in India, organized by the Western India Football Association. It was the second oldest tournament in India after Durand Cup. History Rovers Cup was incorporated by some British football enthusiasts in Bombay, Bombay Presidency, in 1890, as a form of amusement. After the foundation of Bombay Football Association (BFA) in 1902, the tournament became well organized. Patronised by Justice Russell, the tournament was firstly opened to British teams. Later in 1911, Western India Football Association was founded as a result of merger between BFA and Rovers Cup Committee. After justice Russel became president and P. R. Cadell became vice-president of WIFA, Indian clubs were given opportunity to participate, and Bengal United (a squad formed with Indian soldiers serving in British battalions) became first Indian team to compete. IFA Shield
The IFA Shield is an annual football competition organized by the Indian Football Association. The IFA is the governing body of football in the state of West Bengal, came into existence in 1893. Named after the association, the IFA Shield tournament was started in the same year. It is the third oldest football tournament in India, after Durand Cup and Trades Cup, and the one of the oldest football competitions in the world. The royal houses of Patiala and Cooch Behar, A.A. Apcar of Armenian Club and J Sutherland of Dalhousie AC had financially contributed for the inception of the Shield. The coveted shield was designed by Walter Locke & Co.
