Tain Thistle F.C.
Tain Thistle Football Club is an amateur football club playing in the North West Sutherland Amateur Football League in Scotland. They play at Links Park in the town of Tain in the Scottish Highlands. The club was formed in 1997, and originally joined the Ross-shire Welfare League that same year. They remained as members of the Ross-shire Welfare until 2018 when they tendered their resignation in favour of moving to the amateur ranks of the North West Sutherland Amateur League. The club was briefly accepted into the senior North Caledonian League in June 2008 and competed in league matches during the 2008-09 season, becoming the first Tain team to do so since the demise of Tain St Duthus four seasons earlier. In 2009-10, Thistle competed in both league and cup competitions, but withdrew in 2010. Tain
Tain ( Gaelic: ''Baile Dhubhthaich'') is a royal burgh and parish in the County of Ross, in the Highlands of Scotland. Etymology The name derives from the nearby River Tain, the name of which comes from an Indo-European root meaning 'flow'. The Gaelic name, ''Baile Dubhthaich'', means 'Duthac's town', after a local saint also known as Duthus. History Tain was granted its first royal charter in 1066, making it Scotland's oldest royal burgh, commemorated in 1966 with the opening of the Rose Garden by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The 1066 charter, granted by King Malcolm III, confirmed Tain as a sanctuary, where people could claim the protection of the church, and an immunity, in which resident merchants and traders were exempt from certain taxes. ''Good Morning Scotland'' ( gd, Madainn Mhath Alba) is a Scottish breakfast radio news programme. It is broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland weekdays from 06:00 to 09:00. Established in 1973, it is the longest-running radio show broadcast from Scotland and remains one of the most popular. Weekend editions, broadcast between 08:00 and 10:00, were introduced in early 2015. BBC Radio Scotland is a Scottish radio network owned and operated by BBC Scotland, a division of the BBC. It broadcasts a wide variety of programmes. Peter Edwin Allen (born 4 February 1946) is an English radio broadcaster with 40 years' experience in journalism. He has been with BBC Radio 5 Live since it started in 1994, and co-presented the ''Drive'' programme for 16 years from 1998 to 2014. Early life Allen was born in Rochford, Essex, and attended the independent Brentwood School. At 18 he left school and started work with his local newspaper. He emigrated to Australia and worked for the Sydney ''Daily Telegraph''. Broadcasting career In the 1970s Allen switched to working in radio, joining Independent Radio News, the newly launched news service for UK commercial radio. Homecoming Scotland 2009 was a series of events designed to attract people of Scottish ancestry to visit Scotland. The campaign, organised by EventScotland and VisitScotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, and part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, claimed that "for every single Scot in their native land, there are thought to be at least five more overseas who can claim Scottish ancestry." 2009 was the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, the national poet.
