Tahirah Memory is a jazz and soul singer. She is from Portland, Oregon and has performed internationally. Career Memory's performances have been described as intimate experiences for the audience. Her albums include ''Pride'' (2015) and ''Asha'' (2019); ''Asha'' was nominated for several SoulTracks awards. ''Pride'' was produced by Jarrod Lawson. Memory has performed with Lawson in London and Birmingham. In 2013 Memory performed at a benefit for the American Music Program, run by her father, Thara Memory. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. American Music Program
The American Music Program (née Pacific Crest Sinfonietta, Cultural Recreation Band) is a youth jazz band in Portland, Oregon founded by jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator Thara Memory. This non-profit youth music program mentors primary school students from 7th-12th grade. On May 9, 2015, the group won Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington Competition, playing Ellington's ''Tattooed Bride'' from memory. History Under the direction of Thara Memory, Greg McKelvey, and Ronnye Harrison the Cultural Recreation Band was founded in 1983. This multicultural performing orchestra served inner city youth primarily in Portland, Oregon's Albina District. Students in the program competed in state and regional jazz band competitions. Thara Memory was a trumpeter and educator from Eatonville, Florida. He attended Alabama State University and Marylhurst University. He lived in Portland, Oregon, United States from the 1970s until his death in 2017. His daughter, Tahirah Memory, is an internationally known jazz vocalist. Biography In 2005, he founded the American Music Program Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra (often shortened to American Music Program), a youth jazz orchestra in Portland, Oregon, that has won national accolades. During the 2012 Portland Jazz Festival, Memory was honored as 2012's Portland Jazz Master. Memory was a member of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
